I am looking for a newer Video card for AGP 8x support. I am looking to spend 150-200 tops for this card. My question is what is the best card that I can get for that kind of money that will support the newer Vista when it comes out. Thanks guys.... I know jack about video cards and such. =o)

What motherboard do you have? The newer video cards are now
PCI-express (at least the ones I looked at).

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814102608 , but i doubt it will run vista "smoothly" ur best bet is spending a bit more and get a pci-express mobo (unless ur cpu is not socket 939 or lg775 [ i dont think they sell lg775 with agp?]) and well as i was saying, spend some on a pci-e mobo, and get an x850xt, it is supposably only 10% slower than the 7800gs (the fastest agp card on the market) and costs WAY less, u can get it at newegg for about 140, the same as the x800gto but its better, so yeah, that is prolly ur best bet! what cpu do u have?

Ok, my interface is a AGP 8x. The board is a 9CJS ZENITH Chaintech. It looked great at the time.

So anyhow.... I was looking at the 6800GS. Do you guys think that is my best bet? I do not really care for ATI. Also I am not a gamer or anything. I just want a nice display that will be able to run the future Vista eventually. Do not really want to change out the board since I have a P4 Northwood. I would have to change out the board, CPU and just to make it worth while the memory. I would also need to change out the PSU. Pretty much build a brand new box (which I dont want to do) So takign all that into account, never mind a budget, what is the BEST card that SUITS my needs?? Thanks again.

If you're OK with used, an X800 XL or 6800 GT would go for about $150 on ebay, and at stock clockspeeds they would be much stronger options than an X800 GTO or 6800 GS.

I have no issues with used at all. What is the difference if it works right?? lol

I guess I have my options, unless there is a better option no matter what the price is. Like what is the highest end VC with AGP 8x Interface?

Thanks to all you guys that replied.

The very best AGP gaming card is the Gaiward Bliss 7800GS+ SIlent 512MB. It's a full 24-pipe 7900GT under a 7800GS name. Gainward North America has closed shop, so this card has to be purchased from Europe or on Ebay. It costs big bucks to do that...not worth the price.

The plain 7800GS is a 16-pipe card and is basically the top reference AGP card. The X850XTpe from ATI can match it in performance, but features-wise the 7800GS is ahead. Again, these cards are expensive at $260+ and do not nearly offer the performance of a X1800XT or 7900GT PCI-e card priced the same or cheaper.

Next would be the X850XT, X800XTpe, and 6800U. For the most part all overpriced new, but would be a good used find for $150 or less.

The X800XT, 6800GT, X800XL, X850 pro would be next down the list. Currently ATI has the X850 pro for $139 shipped free....currently unbeatable in AGP for that money.

Next down would be the X800 pro, X800GTO, and 6800GS. The 6800GS new is up around $200 or higher and for that money it's a complete waste. A used 6800U would be far better. Don't get confused between AGP and PCI-e 6800GS's. The AGP ones are clocked lower and are slower than a 6800GT by quite a bit. They are basically a plain 12-pipe 6800 with faster memory clock speeds.

EDIT: Ugh! Reading above I see:
Also I am not a gamer or anything. I just want a nice display that will be able to run the future Vista eventually.
These cards are all overkill for a non gamer. I'd look no higher than a 6600 or 6600GT if you want to stay with NV.
