How do you change a desktop icon.. I beleive I was able
to do this easily thru properties in xp before sp2
upgrade but now I can't find a feature to allow icon
change.

pre SP-2, it was right-click the icon>Properties>"Change Icon" button.
Select from what's shown or browse to find others.

If I select properties for an icon, I get the choice to change icon. Is
there a way of listing all available icons on my hard drive? If not, how
can I tell which files contain icons?

right-click desktop>properties> desktop tab>customize desktop

otherwise, you can use an app like iconphile:
http://www.virtualplastic.net/scrow/iphile.html

or you can reshack shell32.dll.
