PCs 1, Consoles 0: The True Gaming Platform

The only reason I have a Windows PC is to play games. If today's games were playable on Linux I wouldn't need Windows.

  4. My primary reason for using Windows XP is for games, but it's also because just about everything else is Windows compatible without having to worry.

  5. When i bought my first computer and started playing games on it, i never went back to a console.
It is upsetting though that alot of games made for consoles were never made for pc.
Also im sure all the Mac users wish they made more games compatible.

  6. For my 10th Birthday my parents let me choose between getting a Nintendo or a Computer. Back then that was a tough decision. I obviously got the computer and have never looked back since. About the only game I wish I could have gotten on the PC was Grand Turismo but I survived without it. To me, the controls and graphics suck on consoles compared to PC's.

  7. Thats exactly the game i was thinking about. I mean geez, look at Gran Tursmo 4. Doesnt that game require you to buy an extra hard drive for the PS2?
Maybe the game makers are boycotting microsoft, who knows.

What about Halo 2? They made 1 for pc but not 2. Are they ever going to? Doesnt make sense to make a killer game for pc but only make the sequel for console.

Would have liked to see the Syphon Filter series made for pc as well. Among alot of others.

  8. Quite honestly, I didn't think Halo was that great of a game. Everyone was ranting and raving about it but games like Unreal Tournament or Tribes puts that game to shame.

  9. Unreal Tournament 99 is deffinately the game of choice since i have been playing for 4 or 5 years now. Didnt like 2k3,
2k4 is not bad but UT 99 is my home.

Halo was a good game though, not the greatest but good.
Didnt like online play too much but i liked the single player. Would have liked to play Halo 2 single player. Not enough to go buy a console to play it though.

    UT ROCKS!!!!

  10. I barely touched 2k4 or 2k3. I'm all about the original. The other ones took too much from Quake III which I thought sucked as well.

  11. guys come on.. pc rules games. nuff said. yeah sure consoles sometimes do come up with interesting games.. but still only in pc do you see and feel fear as u peer at towering striders (Half life 2), or jump nervously at shadows while creeping around unseen ( The Cradle Level - Thief 3), or call an artillery strike while sniping away merrily (Battlefield 2), or feel the thunderous roar of a cavalry charge at massed infantry ( Rome Total War).. do I need say more ? think not :)

With the next gen consoles that leaves the controls that suck. gfx seem ok for a while.

I dislike console rigidity. I like to be able to upgrade my system every year or so. Console life times are just too long (understandably so, but still).

And I'm too old to get used to console controls, maybe the Nintendo Revolution will change that (but I doubt it).

This war between consoles and competing with the PC is hurting us consumers though, games should be cheaper if development could be focussed on one platform.

This simplification of PC games playing, as well as the PC operating system itself, alongside a healthy advertising campaign, will help bring the masses back to the PC. The truly hardcore never really went anywhere, and the ability of the PC to go leaps and bounds ahead of all other hardware in terms of versatility will ensure that the PC will always remain a gaming platform.
    /////////////////
    (1) Why wait for another 10 years or so for a simplified PC O/S when consoles already have that like 20 years ago???

    (2) "truly hardcore went nowhere"...this is a such a big joke!!! LOL. Hardcore WHAT? If he said hardcore HARDWARE fans, i would have agreed. Heck, if he said hardcore FPS and RTS gamer, I WOULD AGREE. But hardcore gamers?? Consoles have the best games and variety and beats PC anytime anyday.
1 year ago, when i've upgraded to a near top of the line PC, then i realized how sucky it is. For all the money i've paid, i'm still playing the same boring games. GOOD GRAPHICS does not means GOOD GAMES. A real HARDCORE GAMER will realized this. A month later, i bought an XBOX to supplement my PS2 and was truly satisfied (not to mentioned i pay a whole lot less).

The PC great for FPS(which i don't play) and RTS(which i enjoy occasionally)..actually i believe PC is the ONLY platform you should play these games, but other PC games have been so dead for years...in fact it's so plain barren!!

I've a PS2 and XBOX and basically all grounds covered...RPGs(too many to mentioned), Arcade racing (Burnout series), 3rd person action(Ninja Gaiden, Omnimusha series, Devil May Cry series), Puzzles etc etc.

I still play the PC for C&C:Zero Hours(love this game!) and some retro games on DOSBOX and emulators(consoles!!!).

A true hardcore gamer goes where the GAME is. Not the other way round. I hope he learn his lesson today.

I'll take a superior game over slightly superior graphics anyday.
It's all about the games YOU want to play. That's what's being a TRUE HARDCORE GAMER about. Not some freaking overclocked CPU and crazy scores in 3DMark 0x...nor the latest GPU or console hardware.

That article is so demeening to gamers everywhere. He should be ashamed of himself.

    Cheers.
  19. Was the article about games.....or hardware. I wont argue that PC hardware will always get better than the latest console hardware. I will say the next gen stuff coming out is so far the most powerful in comparison.

The orginal xbox was below PC power when it came out, the 360 will be very close if not better than 99% of PC's on November 22.

That said the hardware does not matter. Software makers are leaving the PC faster and faster. Games for consoles are coming out much faster and more often than PC games. Its about money and software developers make way more money off of console games and with way less support. My local Gamestop and EB hardly even carry PC games anymore....sad but true.

Tell me what PC game in the last 2 years did not hit the market in need of a patch the day it came out????

PC gaming cost the user so much more.....lets see buy a 7800GTX video card for $499 or more....or get a whole Xbox 360 for $399?????
  20. Yeah, but it's a console. And consoles aren't really comparable to PC's. You obviously like the console better, but unless you're running a 1080p HDTV plasma I just don't see how the graphics could come close. Most people are running analog TV's that have very low resolutions. I don't care how much hardware you put into that console, without the $4000+ TV it can't even be considered comparable to a PC. It's all about the weakest link. You can buy a $10,000,000 stereo set and speakers but if the wiring is 30 gauge Radioshack crap it's going to be a crappy audio system. Alternatively I could just plug the console into my monitor but how many people can do that? Even then, why would I want to step down to a xbox 360? My x800xl is alot better than it ever will be. Look at the stats on the xbox 360 and you'll see that it is nowhere near the performance of a mid range graphics card let alone a 7800gtx.

<font color=red><b>Long live Dhanity and the minions scouring the depths of Wingdingium!
  21. I have a 55 inch Sony LCD rear projection TV, $2499, its a wide screnn 16x9...and 480p and 720P games on it look incredible. That would be 35inches bigger than my Dell 20inch LCD.

Isnt the Xbox 360 supposed to have an ATI R500 or 520...which is more powerful than your card? Maybe not as powerful as the 7800GTX.

The point is you can have all the hardware you want...if a game does not need it...or NO game is out there to use it....its just a room heater.

The Xbox 360 only needs to run kick @ss graphics at 720p...which all game coming out for it will be required to have....any power over 720p (1280x720) will be wasted.
  22. Until six months from now game developers start to exploit it.

As for the PC not having the variety of games, I beg to differ. Apart from a few exceptions such as belayed Halo, the PC has the best of all worlds - games released on the consoles either begin on PC or make their way to PC.

No variety in genres other than FPS and RTS? Well I don't see too many TBS's on consoles either. Also, on my desk in front of me I have Fable: The Lost Chapters and Dungeon Siege II, which I guess means that RPG's are there as well.

I don't see too many MMORPG's on consoles yet, though hopefully they'll make the leap, at which point you'll basically have PC and console gamers inhabiting the same space.

Simulation games are best played on the PC also, though I think I'll hand driving games as best played on consoles unless you have a steering wheel for the PC.

The list goes on. And note Fable, which is a striking example. Xbox gamers have it, and now we PC gamers have it, but I wouldn't bet on seeing it on the PS2 or PS3. The PC is the middle ground where almost all games arrive eventually, and they usually have extra features taking advantage of the PC's technical flexibility and capabilities.

    I couldn't disagree with you more, ATI988.

  23. the only good thing about consoles is programmers can write the code for hardware specific stuff. for pc's it has to be a little more vague so they can t always optimize games. other than that, only sports games should be on console.

  24. If you pull up the stats on the xbox 360 you'll see that the x800xl beats it in a number of stats. On some of the stats, my card beats the xbox by 2000%. Real life performance? I don't know. I'm not sure I've ever really seen a console be benchmarked.

I play games at 1920x1200. A console can't beat that. Hell you play at 1680x1020 don't you? How do you propose beating that on your TV? Your TV is the weakest link. Not everyone can go out and buy a nice 1080p TV either. By the time everyone is running 1080p TV's, PC's will be a couple generations ahead.

What games are you talking about? I don't see a shortage of games at all. There's more games than I have time to play. Nothing missing either. I'm all for racing games on the consoles, and others like sports games, but FPS's suck, RPG's suck, etc etc.

I remember when my friends were all playing Bond. I still don't get it. That was the stupidest game ever. I could never see anything. "Oh man, let's split the screen 4 ways and all play". Yeah, great, he's got a 60" screen and it still sucks. He then busts out UT. What complete garbage on a console. Halo was kinda annoying but at least playable. Mariocart was more fun though. How sad is that?

  27. PCs rule for me. All the games I like to play could never in be effective console games. Games like Age of Empires and Sim City on a console? With the controls they have forget it. I tried playing The Sims on Gamecube once, it was horride comparde to the PC version I had played. But yet they do have better controls in terms of a first-person shooter, for me at least, and thats probally due to my shooty keyboard and its placement. Really though consoles cost too much and do so little other than play games. I rather have something that can play games and can functionally surf the net, burn DVDs, do word proccesing, ect.
  28. The day a console can surf for porn is the day PC's become extinct. I predict it.

  29. Amen to that.

But trying to tell me that consoles have better game selection and more variety is probably ignorant information on your part. Try and tell me even Half Life 1 doesn't support at least 4 different game types. This is something console won't allow. They make you pay more for what you get. I bought Half Life 2 for $30, nearly half of what a console game will cost. I will end up having better resolution because the modellers and texturing programs they use allow for such. Half Life 2 is the most open ended game I've ever seen. Lost Coast is coming out to display High Dynamic Ranging. New mods can implement this. In a year I could get the graphics card in the xbox 360 for easily less than $300.

But the big thing is the whole bottleneck issue, and in graphics, there are many. TV, graphics card, input, speed, space. If your TV can't support high inputs from the game or the graphics card, bottleneck. If your graphics card can't handle the quality at the speed it needs to go at, or can't handle the input from the game or the amount of information it has to process in a short amount of time, bottleneck. If the input has low quality, but the graphics card or TV could handle it, bottleneck. If the bandwidth from any of the components is not large enough, bottleneck.

And you still can't defend the fact that the console companies still take advantage of their position. You have limited choices, no customization compared to a computer. $60 games = not worth it. Unmodddable games or unchanging game = not worth it. I could go on.

I'm objective, I would be going to consoles if they offered more that PCs could. But when you can get an awesome PC for $700, I tend to lean towards PCs.

If you got HL2 gold or silver then you now have DoD:Source. It has HDR already. I love it. It is a great effect and adds to realism.

However in multi player, the option does affect the game, sometimes you are blinded because you walk from a dark room into sunlight, and the other way around you will see more in a dark room than someone that has HDR support disabled.

Overal, I'm very pleased with it.

  36. I love PC games, I play only Mario Cart on the console, the rest of the games, which belongs to RPG, MMORPG, RTS, TBS, FPS are better on PC for me.
    BUT!!!
Despite of my preferences and what seems to be the preference for most of the posters to this thread, I do not believe that this reflects the majority view. May be because a console seems to be cheaper, but the fact is that there are much more console games are sold. So much more, that my local gaming stores stopped selling computer games at all!

There was nice time (10 or even 5 years ago) when half of the gaming store belonged to the PC games, now, even if you can find them, it is a single shelf, and not even the wall shelf. :(

This indicates to me that people for whatever reasons stop buying PC games, that means that we will see less and less PC games to come, which will reduce number of PC gamers, which futher reduce the PC game sales and so on. So, I have quite a pessimistic view, despite of the fact that I do believe that PC is better suited platform for majority of the game genres.
  37. people that prefer consoles are simply gamers, people that prefer gaming on a pc are pc enthusiasts that also like to game. pc games are superior in every way to consol games but you have to know enough about a computer to not eat the mouse to be able to install the game. consol gamers just want to put the disc in and start playing. as far as i can see, consols have only 2 advantages, you can take it to some one elses house easily (as long as they have another tv) and you can sit on a couch while playing it. pcs have the advantage because you can do a lot more with a pc than a console which ofsets the price, not to mention infinately better controls than consoles. i dont care how good you are with those consol controls, a fps with a keyboard and mouse will always have the advantage over those stupid sticks. joysticks are for flying, not fps!!!!

  40. Agreed,

We would have seen a huge drop off in PC game availability already if the demand for console games would be much higher than the demand for PC games.

What is rather annoying though is when a console game is ported to PC but they forget to adapt the controls to PC. Luckily for me, such games are usually not my thing anyway.

  41. I do not think that increased buying online is the case. I can argue that console games are no different, and also could be bought online, yet the gaming stores still sell them, and sell them more, judging by the shelf space. I also remember reeding that for one of the recent years (2003 or 4) the computer game sales were down 20%, but I can't buck up it with link now. May be somebody else has better knowledge of the game sales statistics and can supply the data (with link) here?
  42. And I found some data for 2003 from http://retailindustry.about.com/od/seg_toys/a/bl_npd012703_2.htm :

The PC game software industry showed signs of slowing down, with revenues from retail sales down 14 percent, topping $1.2 billion in sales in 2003 versus $1.4 billion in 2002.
  43. And the trend continued in 2004 (according to http://www.writenews.com/2005/021105_gamesales_04.htm ):

"According to the data compiled by the NPD Group, overall U.S [.snip.] computer games sales were $1.1 billion (45 million units). [.snip.], By way of comparison, 2003 figures were: [.snip.] computer games sales were $1.2 billion (52.7 million units)."

So the future is not bright so far for PC games. :-O

  45. I hope as well, but look, sales numbers ARE decreasing, that means that we will have LESS money put into PC games, meaning producing less PC game and of lesser quality.

Plus, right now everyone is so excited about next generation consoles, which will even further hit the PC games sales numbers.

I am not saying that there is no future for PC gaming, I am just saying that it will not be as exciting as I would hope.

I also judge by amount of games that I get interested in per year. This year the amount was less than the last year, and the year before. The amount of new games per week significantly decreased also. And if you look at the average game quality, it is also less (I can judge it by looking at the game scores at GameSpot for any given month).

So it is not gloom and doom, but it is gloom.
  46. you should also include that the market will be directly affected by those members of the PC gaming community that pirate games(download via piratebay and such) instead of actually buying games.... i think that has some effect on the sales too.

  47. If you're wondering why a place like EB or Gamestop don't have many computer games it's because they aren't competative. They can't compete with Frys or Costco or Walmart or online stores, etc.

I went to my local Gamestop to buy HL2. They wanted $60. I went again to get BF2. They wanted $55. I got both games for $35 ea iirc at Frys.
