Ok.. I should know this but.. The forest root has an Exchange server. Off
of this domain is a child domain that does not use this Exchange server.
Will there be any issues with us adding email addresses for these users not
using the Exchange server even though they are in the same forest?

If they are in the same forest, they share the common schema which is
exchange aware, so there will be no issues using mail attribute in child
domain.

Jeff,

Have you run Exchange setup /domainprep in this child domain.

exchange domainprep is required in the following domains.
forest root domain
any domain that hosts exchange servers.
any domain that hosts user accounts with mailboxes.

It's how ever not a requirement to use the mail attribute, the mail
attribute is in the default schema.

Ok.. I think I need to rephrase my question. Basically, this network SHOULD
have been two forests (I didnt design it, just trying to fix it as best as
possible). The child domain is a seperate entity from the main company. The
child domain consists of OUs assigned to various third party companies using
a service provided by the primary company. They will not be using the
Exchange server here (which is not currently part of AD. They still run a
4.0 domain but will be cutting over soon). We want to populate the email
fields in the child domain users with their current email addresses. Is this
a doable solution given that everyone is still in the same forest?

From what I have seen (and test) you can do this. Actually from what I have
seen the default email attribute corresponds to the default SMTP email
address (generated by RUS) .. so if those users do not have an exchange
mailbox .. I think that everything is ok. I'm not 100% sure about this so if
I'm wrong please correct me.
