Looking at some of the other threads here, I think this might be a basic question, but I've had a look around and can't see an obvious FAQ / Sticky which answers it.

I currently have a QDi mobo (here is spec):

http://www.qdigrp.com/qdisite/eng/products/platiniX2.htm

with a 1.7Ghz P4 processor. It's starting to chug a bit, and I'm wondering about upgrading the processor. I've messed about with all the usual stuff in the box (hard drives, memory, graphics etc.) but I've never changed a CPU.

Some questions:

1. Is this a do-able physical operation, or is it for specialists? Don't want to end up with a damaged motherboard and no computer!

2. What exactly can I upgrade to? I've searched for socket 478 processors at my normal hardware supplier (http://www.dabs.com/), and the only ones they have are Celeron D's (the 335 and 340 models to be precise) - can I put these in my mobo?

3. If I'm going to upgrade, I might as well stretch as far as possible - any other recommendations than the Celerons?

Really appreciate your help ... Nick.

Your board most probably is old enough not to suppurt CeleronDs and new P4s and every old p4 is just too expensive for what you get, (Forget the plain celerons, they're terrible by todays standards) .

The best way for you may be a new board and a Celeron D or if you want more performance for extra $15-20 get a Sempron.
That's for the budget only.
With $40-60 more you can get a P4 / Athlon64 etc

You basically stuck with what you can do with it.

I only found one P4 2.6 400mhz 478 CPU:

Ebay - $31 bid last I saw

Might want to take a fresh look to upgrade to another MB. There are so many things to go to as far as budget, especially when the market starts up with conroe, and anything AMD has to answer to it. Should see some kind of price changes going on.

There are some good AM64 systems, that people could prolly recommend, price wise.

Even some good Intel PD systems you could get, and later get conroe to upgrade to if you want that path.
