i built a computer 3 years ago with a P4 2.53. changed the mobo to an Asus p4p800 2 years ago and put in some comp usa 400 w ps. have an x800 pro i bought 1 year ago. the ram is 2x 512 pc2700. havent had any probs playin hl2 or wow. was thinking about giving it to my dad so he can play age of empires and his golf and baseball games that will probly look better than on his best buy comp. do you think conroe will ready for systems in about a month. i read end of july but i've also read that it will be longer.
I know most expensive doesnt mean best product. So what are the top choices for mobo, kind of ram, and video card for a conroe system. i'm not concerned with value/performance. just quality and performance. I'd rather get some things now rather than wait until conroe comes out. I would think that since demand will be greater then, the prices are gonna go up.
I would wait a month or two -- two reasons. A) Core 2 will jolt the market slightly and prices will be in flux, I would expect them to drop more toward the end of Q3. B) ATI is going to release a new GPU soon and both nVidia and ATI current top line will price adjust to the new product.
And hopefully mobo and DDR2 development will continue and prices of both will drop significantly. Of course if one waits till the end of Q3, then K8L might be approaching. It's a dilemma.
Wait a few months even if you don't plan on going with Core 2.
I need a new system by september, and I hope, but doubt Core 2 will be available for me by then. Also, i'm on a very tight budget, and it looks like the AM2 solution will be cheaper than a marked up Core 2 + board.

YEA~! as soon as CORE 2 DUO comes out everything old as or older than Socket 939 technology and everything Chipset 955 or older The prices of them are going to drop likea rock. basically they are gonig to go down the toilet. So you can imagine ur self fishing out change from the bottom of the couch seats looking for 2$ for a new "prescott" or another 4$ for a Mobo+case combo and have yourself a "prescott" system for around 10$ or you can be smart and get the exact same thing for 200$ at Dell with a locked multiplyer and a crappy heatsink and fan and waste 190$ just for getting the Dell logo stamped on your plastic case

It's a tossup as to whether Core 2 will be available before Sep. I'm sure Dell will get the first models, so you may want to hawk their site.

Whatever Dell will aquire will automatically turn to Shytt. Even if Dell aquires the best quality Core 2 DUos they will be the worst and most bottlenecked Cores to benchmark. they'll be maybe about as efficient as an overclocked Pentium 2 Xeon
