The SLI extention supports dual PCI-E graphics cards that are themselves SLI capable.

Meaning the SLI allows you to run 2 Video Cards that cooperate together as 1 sharing the computations between themselves, basically close to twice the video processing capability.

If you only have intentions of running 1 video card you do not need the SLI capable M/B.
