Over the course of a few months, I have been interested in overclocking a computer because I wanr a fast PC; however, I do not know where to start. What would I need to start learning and building my own overclocked PC?

First you need to decide what's your budget. Then you need to decide what you'll be using the computer for. Example #1: If you're going to be using the computer for gaming, you can get a cheaper CPU and spend more on the video card, because most games are video-card limited. A faster CPU helps in gaming, but not as much as a faster GPU (video card). Example #2: If you're going to use the computer for video editing, digital music, or office apps, you'll want to spend more for a faster CPU and get a cheap GPU because it doesn't matter so much in these tasks.

Then you need to decide if you want an AMD or Intel CPU. Right now, Athlon 64's perform better than Pentium 4's and produce a lot less heat, but the new Intel CPU (the Conroe, coming out July 27) is faster than the Athlon 64 in the benchmarks that have been released so far. Extreme overclockers are getting their Conroes to over 5GHz using liquid nitrogen to cool the CPU.

I am willing to spend anywhere from 5 grand to 7 grand so I can have a very fast computer. I am using my computer for multi-purposes like video editing for my snowboarding and skateboard hoobies, playing some games, watching high quailty porn(haha j/k), and I might want to do some music with it. Also, I am leanding towar AMD processors; however, that Conroes you mention sounds interesting. But then again, I am just a NEWB. Should I start off with something intense like 5Ghz?

5 to 7 grand 8O !!!! I'd bewilling to spend 1 grand if I had it :( . How about throwing a bit my way

You could have yourself a damn quick pc for that price. There are loads of companies out there that could build you a super fast pc for that cash with phase change cooling, top spec graphics, top spec everything.

Magazines like CustomPC review high end pc all the time. Do a google search and see what comes up. If you want to do a custom build you could copy their spec's but fitting things like water cooling or phase change stuff gets even more complicated.
