Good day and thank you in advance!

I'm am trying to add a new AD domain controler in an existing domain.

Because a server (W2000) with AD does not exist anymore and was never
removed with DCPROMO, I used the AD Sites and Services GUI and removed it
manually (it offered and did a DCPROMO for me).

I presently have an other Windows Server 2003 running AD (mixed) that was
sort of a BDC. It is now possible to raise the domain functionnal level to
2000 native or even a 2003 domain. I get a no PDC found error if I try.

In Active Directory Domains and Trusts, if I right click the Properties I get:

You cannot modify domain or trust because a PDC emulator cannot be
contacted. Please verify that the PDC emulator and the network are both
online and functionning properly.

I now want to install a second AD on an other Windows Server 2003. I use
the wizard (I believe DNS set up is OK caus' everything is well replicated
and the GUI goes through the process of finding the domain in the forest) an
after roughly 5 minutes I get this message:

This Active Directory installation requires domain configuration changes,
but whether these changes have been made on the domain controler 'X.local' is
undetermines. The installation process has quit.

"The system cannot find the file specified."
(Active Directory was not installed.)

How can I promote my existing DC to a PDC or better yet move to a w2000
native functionnal level?

Am i even on the right track?

Thanks again,
Dora

You need to remove the orphaned objects.
