I'm thinking of buying a new motherboard in order to be able to buy a PCI-E card since my current motherboard is two years old and only supports AGP.
I have a P4 3.0Gz Prescot CPU w/HT, wich according to what ive heard is still pretty good since Dual-Core CPUs only perform 30-40% better then single core CPUs and even less in games, where it really matters to me.
I've also heard that in order to get a motherboard with PCI-E i would i need a new socket 775 CPU.
So is there any chance i can buy a socket 775 motherboard with PCI-E and apply my socket 478 CPU to it, or is it each socket to its own?
Thnx

In the past conversion "sockets" were available (PII I know for sure), however I dont believe a 478 to 775 exists and even if it did the performance loss would be significant.

However this late July man of the Pentium chips are going to expierence some drastic price falls and you will be able to pickup a good Single or Dual Core chip for between $110 and $150.

s478 board with PCIe

I'm not sure if it's just for P-M's, though. Your best bet right now is to get that refurb X800XL for $120 from the ATI website, and then upgrade your whole system in about a year when WIndows Vista and DX10 cards come out. Or just wait a couple of months for DX10,

Well, there are very few 478 and PCI-E motherboards. I have found 2 so far.

The thing is that my CPU is very good, even though its 2 years old. Its a Prescott P4 3.0GHz 1M L2 cach 800MHz FSB.
And getting a dual core to match that would be expensive, not to mention that dual cores arent that great on games.

What i want to do is get a really high end graphics card and not a new CPU, are u sure that there arent any adapters that i can use?
