Will it work, is it worth it?

Hey ppl, I am wanting to update the graphics card in my PC which is a P4 1.6Ghz just recently put more ram in, now 1Gb (PC2100). The motherboard is a gigabyte GA-8IRX which only supports 4x AGP. I was considering purcahsing the GeForce 6600GT which i'm pretty sure is 8x but was wondering if its performance would be largly reduced by other hardware factors ram, cpu etc.. and would it work im my system because it only 4x ? I was also considering the radeon 9600XT, would this be better suited from my system ? Sorry about all the writting but i really need some help.

Cheers

The 6600GT will work fine. 4X slot will not hold back anything. There is little difference (not much, if any).

Will i be able to get all of the performance out of the 6600GT because of my cpu speed and and old DDR ram OR am i just better off settling for a lesser card such as the 6600LE or the radeon 9600XT?

Thankx

Ok ppl help me decide, the GeForce 6600GT is going to cost me $81 (AUS) more than the Radeon 9600XT. I know there is a largish performance issue between the two but I dont want to spend the extra money if my ageing system is going to bottleneck the performance of the 6600GT which will then make it only slightly a better performer over the 9600XT which will not make it worth the extra $81 (AUS). Can someone please help me clarify this as I dont want to make the wrong move.

It depends on how much you value your money, the 6600GT is significantly faster than the 9600XT.

BTW, there are no "8x" cards, they're all either "8x/4x" or "8x/4x/2x", so any AGP card now on the market will work.

Hey ppl, thanks for all your posts still a bit unclear on deciding which card to get. So please keep posting and help me decide. The extra $81 (AUS) doesn't bother me too much but I dont want to spend it if my system is going to bottelneck it too much.

Thanks heaps

that video card will work, but your processor is going to become the next downside on your system, not Many new games that i know of, can support 1.6ghz. Maybe some Barely can, but thats just my $0.02

Ok. Just as everyone else has said, a 6600 GT will work fine and definately WON'T bottleneck in your system. It wouldn't unless you had a cpu around 700mhz (and maybe even then it wouldn't bottle neck). Your 1.6ghz cpu definately WILL bottleneck your system in just about any current day games with all the graphics turned way up.

For what you are wanting to do, a 6600GT would be great along with any higher end Ati x8xx series. (an x800 gto in particular would be awsome! and most likely keep your old system at its max performance.) Although the x800 GTo I have is awsome in my 3year old pc, a 6600 gt would out perform my x800 by alot.

Besides, the card costs about $80 online and is ALOT cheaper than my x800 and yet performs better.
Don't worry about your agp slot as long as it is 4x and/or 8x compatible. It will allow any card that has a'4x' or '8x' stamped on the box. The difference is miniscule in performance.

Oh....GO FOR IT!
