Hi, just signed up today to get some input on a new PC I am building.

I have thoroughly read the 805 overclocking article and am hard set on repeating the results. I would like comments on whether the system I am considering can safely run this set up. To warrent this upgrade I am going to college in less than 2 months and would like a moderately "future proof" machine to upgrade from my current set up of 6800LE, AMD 3400+ sckt 754, shuttle, 2gb DDR g.skill. This worked for me while I was carting it around to lan parties 30 miles away but now I am looking for a more fixed solution.

I am also trying to keep the price down around $1200. All of the prices and delivery will be through either newegg.com or Tigerdirect so if you have input please try and provide links through these 2 sites.

Current Specs:

6600 Conroe, we will assume: $350
AW9D, again assuming: $180
Radeon X1900XT 512MB: $325
2GB Corsair DDR2 800: $200
Cooler Master Centurion 5: $55
HIPER 580w Power Supply: $100
Creative Sound Blaster Audigy2 ZS Platinum: $100

Brings me to a total of: $1310

Input:
Razor Diamondback
Saitek Red backlit Keyboard

Im not sure you are trying to get a D805 when conroe is coming out in like two weeks.

Even the cheapest Conroe will beat D805 in everything. (Everything)
Isn't that why you are choosing a mobo with Conroe Support?

Your X1900XT won't perform as well with your cpu since the cpu is holding the gfx card to perform its max ability.

// I would also like additional information on the AW9D from abit as far as
// conroe support.

Actually that is what I meant to say through this little comment.

What will come out on top an 805 OCed to 4.0ghz or a:

Core E6600 - 2.40GHz, 1066MHz FSB, 32+32KB L1, 4MB L2, Dual Core, TDP 65W - $316 - Q3

After the release of the Conroe processors I will be short on time on getting something worked out before moving out. And I will be gone the week before school, I am pressed for time cause it gives me only 5 days to get a new processor into the system if something goes wrong. So my thought process was getting a Conroe capable board then waiting a year and replacing the 805.

In the few moments of thinking this through I think I answered my own question. 4mb cache size? Wtf was I thinking with the 805  That's quite a boost from 2mb.

Dont get me wrong but,
OCing a D805 to a 4.0ghz even with watercooling... is stupid when you can get a much better cpu E6600 as you stated.
(take off the water cooler.)

E6600 is going to be MUCH more faster than D85 even if D805 is oced.
A 4ghz d805 cannot perform as well as fx60, which E6600 can.

Toms actually did a stupid experiment, ocing the D805 to the maximum.
Now so many people wants to get D805 to oc as much as tom did..
which is kinda rare and also kills cpu's lifetime

:) *EDIT* I reccommand you a 7900GTX not X1900XT

You should get 2GB of DDR2-800 RAM and wait for Conroe and get a E6600 CPU or better and stick with the X1900XT 512MB, it's much better than people think.

Instead of the D 805, get the D 930 and save yourself the heat and power bill with better overclocking ability and more L2 cache.

You beat me to it! My usual suggestion for 805 builds. :)

in graphic intensive games if he overclocks the 805 there wont be a cpu bottleneck, especially when he ups the resolution to 1280x1024 with full eye candy...also conroe will be available through vendors like dell and hp in two weeks but most likely wont be available to us for maybe a couple weeks to a month afterwards...

it would be a good option as there may be high demand for conroe when its available at newegg that he may want to wait until the demand goes down and prices drop from less demand

Any way you cut it I am going to want a Conroe supporting Motherboard whether I go with the 805, 930, or 6600.

When do you think these boards, and I'm not talking about the current boards you can buy, will be available to consumers. I am looking at the Abit AW9D right now and they said a retail around $150-180 which is about the same as their current model AW8D.

Please keep in mind that I would like everything to be sent to my home address, not while I'm enrolled. So anything shipped later than say August 15th (3 days before I leave) won't make it in time.

Right now I am leaning towards the 6600 with that spacious 4mb cache. I would also mention that the games I play are BF2, Quake4 (just got it :), and WoW. BF2 and Quake are painfully stuttery on my current system and being able to 40man at high settings is something I desire for WoW, specially since I do some frapsing.

I just wanted to say that unless you are going to college for some sort of graphics, you will not need a 'future proof' PC. Word still runs on computers from like 6-8 years ago :p.

College kids dont study anymore gramps, they play WoW 24/7...

I've really grown to hate that game, i see so many poor souls addicted to it.
I'll never understand the idea of spending couple months of your life just to upgrade to level 60...

I am not addicted to WoW by any means. I just like to get the most out of my games while I can play them. Theres nothing like wasting time when you wait 10 minutes to get into a BF2 game.

You should stick with the X1900XT because of it's oh so powerful shaders and it's a beast. If I were you I would go for a Creatvie XFi instead of the ZS card.
