I recently built myself a nice new pc, but I'm still using the RAM from my old pc. They're 2 x 512 sticks of PC2700, 1 is kingston, the other is some brand I haven't really heard of before (forget what it is).

Now, I was thinking of buying this kit of 1GB Corsair TWINX1024-3200C2 DDR400 RAM (link) and for a pdf from the manufacturer (link)

Just wondering if this upgrade will be worth it. This is within my budget, and Corsair seem to get good reviews. I've heard that 3200 isn't necessarily that much better than 2700, but I thought perhaps the dual channel thing might make a big difference. I probably won't be overclocking it or anything, I'm not too confident about that :P

Also, I have had no problems with the current RAM, everything runs hunky dory, so would it be worth keeping it in as well? I know 2700 and 3200 have different fsb speeds or whatever, is it possible to set the slot things for the 2700 to 333 and the slots for the 3200 to 400 or some such. Yes, I'm a nooby, but that's why I'm asking for advice :P

The new computers specs are:

DFI Infinity SLi
AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+
XFX 7900gt 550/1630
512mb of kingston pc2700 and 512mb of something else pc2700
250gb sataII segate hdd 16mb
blah blah blah (dunno what other specs would help)

I should probably also mention that it's mostly for games, and a bit of potoshop for work here and there.

Cheers,

Tim

ok where to start...

if u play the latest games u will definetly benifit from the extra ram

yes corsair is good but if you arent gonna o/c then u could probly just get another kingston or set of kingstons.
it is not good to mix ram brands and i have had trouble with this be4

pc3200 is around a 5-10% increase over pc2700 and then dual channel is around 5-10% more
however if u have different ram speeds it will only run as fast as the slowest ram u got.

does your m/b support dual channel ram? if it does y isnt your current ram in dual channel?

It's probably because they're from different manufacturers. Only a pair of the same manufacturer at the same capacity will work in dual channel mode.
