With flash memory prices falling rapidly, its possibile to build hard drives soley out of flash memory. With this in mind wouldnt it, being an electronic device, make redundancy RAID unecisary? Also i heard that Flash has 2X the read speed of the fastest HD but terrible write speeds, can anyone confirm this? Sorry one last one, how soon do you think we will see affordable ($300) and big (150GB) flash HDs? Thank you and discuss!

I don't think Mat was talking about RAM drives but actual Flash drives and I have a few comments.
First, the bitmicro page you sent us to seems a little dated: the best interface offered is ATA 66. Also, the raptors out there seem to be much better in transfer speeds (86MB/s burst, 54MB/s sustained, opposed to 66MB/s burst and 28MB/s sustained). The only advantages I see that the flash drives you gave us to compare have is in the access time and IO's. The fastest platter drive can get down to 8 MS, whereas the access time on the flash drive is <100 Nanoseconds. As far as the IO's go, the max IO's acheived by the platter drives are 1000-1300, but the Flash offers a minimum of 1000 and a max of 16000.

Here is a link to another company who makes solid state disks but their's appear to be even slower.
