Hi,

The current setup I have is one domain with 4 servers, physically in
different offices (Connected with 256k links), but in one site as far as the
active directory knows.

As a result (I am guessing) when people log in, they get authenticated from
random servers.

I want to set up DFS, but (again I am guessing) because the active directory
has only one site, when pulling stuff off, or adding stuff to a DFS share,
spanned across all 4 servers, it doesnt always use the "home" server.

Would splitting the servers up into sites sort this out?

If so, could it affect anything else (Exchange 5.5?)

The current offices have different IP ranges
192.168.1.x
192.168.2.x
192.168.3.x
192.168.4.x

Would this need to be changed?

Thanks for any help!

No you don't have to change subnets, just define subnets in AD Sites and
Services, create sites and add subnets to respective sites. Create and
configure site links and thi is it. the clients (2000/XP) will automaticaly
pick up the right DC in their site. For other clients, install DSclient
extensions from Windows Server CD. This way they will be able to get their
closest CD in a site.

No, creating sites will have no impact on exchange 5.5 as exchange has its
own directory service and own site configuration...

Excelent!

I have created a new site, but can't work out what I need to do woth the
Inter-Site Transports.

I have the Default IP->DEFAULTIPSITELINK
This has a cost of 100 and a Replicate every 180 minutes.

Not sure how this works!
Do I need to create a new one for each site?

My network is a star, with our main office connected directly to the other
three, if that makes any difference!

Does there need to be a different cost for traffic between them main office
and a directly connected office, opposed to two indirectly connected
offices?

Well you create new intersite connector if you want to have diferent
replication schedule. In the connector you specify on what schedule your
replication works. The cost is needed for AD to calculate the best
replication path of AD across the sites.
You could also use
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/windowsser...

to get some info on how to setup sites ...

Sparks,

In a star all communication will go through the core so there is no real
benefit to doing any customization on the site replication links. This only
becomes truly useful as you start meshing your network or stressing the
bandwidth on the links.
