phillips dvd rw problem

I installed a internal phillips dvd rw in my dell, it plays cd rom and music cd's but when I try to play a dvd or record anything my computer shuts down. I have a DVD rom drive that came with the dell installed and removed the cd rom drive to install the dvd rw. Any ideas of what could be wrong?

As far as I know that's either a problem with the drivers you're using being compatible with your Dell or, maybe, a conflict with system resources. You might want to check your device manager just to rule that out.

I think it's interesting that it's a Phillips product you're having problems with. My brother had problems using Phillip's media in his Dell optical drive and tech support told him that there was a known issue with using that brand of media. Maybe there's a general compatibility problem with Phillips and Dell?
