whenever i try to enter safe mode to remove a 'virus' the
keyboard fails. Help.

What kind of keyboard? A USB keyboard won't work in safe
mode unless the motherboard and BIOS support legacy USB. A
wireless keyboard won't work either.

Spend $5 and get a old style PS/2 keyboard for the
troubleshooting.
