I am sure the multiplier is locked upwards but I guess it's also locked downwards on P4s so all you can do is play with the FSB.
If you make 60°C or more (under load) with your current cooler you should also get a new one. Theorically should overclock well but not as well as the 530 or 520.
I bet you're looking for conroe and want to squeeze your 550

I have an old P4 560 clocked at 3.6Ghz, I can push it like 4.2Ghz on air, but you can do better if you have better cooling. And for the mutiplier I believe that all the P4 5xx series can be unlockable, I can unlcok my 560, and you should be able to as well. All P4 6xx series are locked. I hope this help

As you can see you can push it from 3.4 to 3.6 or more but if 200+ MHz make sense on my 3000+ ( it's more than 10% of 1800MHz), it won't change much the things for a 3.4GHz CPU (it's less than 6% while 8-10% is considered the minimum reasonable gain form OCing.

4GHz+ with good cooling. Prescotts run hot, but I'd be worried about a temp over 60C. Low to mid-50s is an okay temperature.

True... but a Prescott will not throttle till near 80C, but it is not difficult to keep it below 60C

a vantec 92mm 119cfm fan will keep it cool.

a vantec 92mm 119cfm fan will keep it cool.Yep, and it will p*ss off your neighbours too, as they think you have a jet engine in your comp.room. 8O I suspect getting over 4.0 will take some MAJOR cooling, but 3.8-3.9 should be no probs, with good case airflow. Prescott will not "suffer" with over 60C, they have a great tolerance for heat...but as everyone has said try to keep it below 60C-65C. Make sure you have some fans blowing on the MOSFETS, and even your HD as they'll get nice and toasty warm and case temps can climb. GL :)

PS. Let us know how you make out.

A Prescott in a shuttle case is a bad idea. Get a really good cooler if you want to overclock that f*cker. I had a P4 540 in an HP case with only a rear fan, and the CPU and mobo fried.

supposedly the Shuttle ICE cooler is pretty good.
