I am studying for an exam and have no experience of AD, am confused with
regards to Global catalogue. Books state that "AD automatically builds the
first GC on the first DC in the Forest ?? at what point does a forest
appear is this as soon as you install AD on a DC. Having not installed
win2k server in a test environment yet I cannot get my head around this one.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yes.

Yes. On the first DC.

It's "first" because you choose (on the wizard): New Forest.

By definition, the first DC in that Forest creates the Forest.

You should get the free copy and find some (minimal)
hardware to put it on.

No problem.

Do you understand...?
The GC is a DC (always).
You can have as many GCs as you wish
(up to [nearly] the number of DCs)
GCs hold a MINIMUM reference to every object
in the forest
There should be a GC in ever SITE. Why?
More than one for fault tolerance.
Even more for performance of some net
aps like Exchange that use the GC
Exchange 2000+ uses the GC the way it
used to use a GAL (global address list)

I would also HIGHLY recommend experience installing and running this before
taking any exam over it. You really will need that kind of experience to
pass any of the AD exams.
