In my event viewer i noticed that netlogon services has problem. It
started first and then followed by dns, which is incorrect sequence.
The event id in event viewer is 5781. The error is as below. Currently
i'm using Win2000 AD domain and dynamic update. I've refered to
article Q193888 which describe this problem , but don't quite
understand how to solve this. I also have dcdiag and netdiag result.
Below are the results. Anyone pls advise. Thanks

That's just because DNS hadn't loaded properly and Netlogon tried to
reregister it's SRV records in DNS.
You can safely ignore this. Netlogon will attempt to, and succeed,
reregister later.
You can play around with the order that services start in the registry to
stop this from happening - I've done this in the past, but there's really no
need. However, if like I used to be, you hate seeing errors in the logs,
then make netlogon depend on w32time. You do this by navigating to:
HKLM\ SYSTEM\ CurrentControlSet\ Services\ Netlogon
And editing the REG_MULTI_SZ value. You should add, w32time and press
return (there has to be a line underneath the last string).
Note. In Win2000, you'll need to use reged32 as regedit can't do
REG_MULTI_SZ.

Paul,
Is there a problem here because the DC also has a NIC with a different IP
address with the loopback as its DNS server. If it is trying to register
the SRV records through that NIC too, it may not find a DNS server listening
on that IP address.
thoughts??

Paul,
Is there a problem here because the DC also has a NIC with a different IP
address with the loopback as its DNS server. If it is trying to register
the SRV records through that NIC too, it may not find a DNS server listening
on that IP address.

Yes, good point. I've noticed that although some people say to use the
loopback interface, it doesn't always work properly and can cause issues.
Hadn't thought about not listening -that could be the case, but the user
would have to have changed the DNS server to only listen on a certain IP.
Although I've come across this issue with boxes pointing to their correct IP
address too.
This does beg the question however, of the purpose of that second NIC?
Daniel, what are you using the two NICs for? Don't get me wrong, there's
nothing wrong with this -it just can cause confusion and issues when you're
not expecting it if it's not done properly...

When looking at this problem in the past, it's been because the netlogon
process is up and running before the DNS server is. Thus, forcing a service
to depend on another forces it to wait for other services to start.
In my example, I chose w32time because it's one of the last services to
load.
Services load sequentially. And, if you were to think about it, on
single-processor systems everything does. The OS just makes it look like
things are happening simultaneously ;-)

I just did a quick search on this to ensure I wasn't harping on about a
different event : )
I've found a couple of KBs that pertain to this event ID but not the issue
that I've been talking about. Ryan nailed one of the issues - pointing to
the loopback. There's also single-label domain names (which you don't
have), etc.
Have a look at this:
There's also this, but from speed reading it I'd say this isn't and issue
and not to follow it ;-)

Note. In Win2000, you'll need to use reged32 as regedit can't do
REG_MULTI_SZ.

started first and then followed by dns, which is incorrect sequence.
The event id in event viewer is 5781. The error is as below. Currently

Thanks

Paul, i followed the article and it works, thanks. Btw when Ryan did
mentioned that the DC would refer itself as DNS does it mean that it
has loopback on its tcpip setting which also mentioned in the article ?
Thanks

Yes, I believe so. Instead of having 127.0.0.1 configured in the DNS
settings you should have the *actual* IP address of the DC/ DNS.
Glad that worked. All the best.

From this, I'd say that the issue is still the order in which the services
are loading.
