ok, so my old computer died recedntly and now I have a job and will soon be able to buy a new computer for about $1200. the most important part is the new graphics card so right now I'm looking at a 7600gt, a x1800xt 256mb, or possibly a 7900gt. please offer suggestions.

I would go for a 7600GT now, and then upgrade to a DX10 card when they become available.

7900GT and X1800XT are best cards from those three. You can't go wrong with either (7900GT or X1800XT) card.

yeah that's another thing I want a computer that can run Medieval 2 Total War when it comes out (november) but I don't wanna spend too much money on a new rig. Could anyone tell me how the 7600gt handles games like HL2 and Cs:S at 17" monitor resolutions like 1248x1024?

7600GT will run it fine.
