Until my 7800GS arrives I am fiddling around with overclocking a Geforce 6600. I have a Zalman Fata1ity FS-V7 coming soon and I was wondering what I should be able to hit.

Stock: 300mhz core, 500mhz memory.
Overclocked: 500mhz core, 550mhz memory (WITH STOCK COOLER)
Overclocked with Zalman: ???

When I put on the Zalman, what do you guys think I can max out then? The BGA heatsinks are apparently great for overclocking memory.

Just curious.

you actually ordered w 7800GS oh dear you should have saved your money and bought one of the gainward AGP 7800GS's wiv either the 7900GT chip on or the 7800GT chip failing that buy a pci express motherboard

I have a PNY 6600 card, and I've recently just added a zalman cooler to it. The limit of my card is 530/550, mainly down to the voltages. If you can push your card any higher than that, then good luck, but you'd need to voltmod it to get it higher.

The Zalman cooler is far better that the pathetic little tinfoil cooler that came with it. Before fitting it, my max temps were in the 80-90C range, now the card barely hits 55 at full load.

If you do decide to voltmod the card, post the details and the results. It'd be interesting to see what you get.

did you run any benchmarks on your card? i would appreciate if you do, because i have the same card. An asus 300/550mhz and would like to know if an overclock is worth. also, what about the temps with the stock cooler?

I cannot translate what you wrote. If you could make it legible.
I am AGP-only at the moment, I don't care to go to PCI-E until next year because I don't need to.

I ran benchmarks with PC Wizard 2006. I got around a 10-15% increase depending on the benchmark.

What should I use to really benchmark it? I forget what you guys use these days... and it has to be free :)

Thanks

i've voltmodded my 6600gt and i got 590/1300 ... not very impressive. the architecture has a wall of around 650 tho. Performance wise +5~10% depending on the game. Heat wise...100c+. In fact when i play blood money at stock clocks it peaks at 115c what gives..? wat a sucky cooler i have lol

Too bad the results are online-based as I don't have Internet connected to the PC at the moment because of a unique situation. Oh well.

I am anxious to see what the 7800GS does to the 6600. mUAHAH

what you mean? it shows you the results when finished, the online stuff is for pro version only i guess. It publushes your scores online automatically.
knowing your score you can compare with other benchmarks avaiable on review sites.

the 7800GS will be a improvement over your 6600 but you should really save your pennies and buy a PCI-e system as the 7800GS is barely better than the 6800GS on AGP

@jap0nes, I can tell you about my OC at my old G6600. It reached 550/550. It was an Leadtek (the stock cooler was an 6600gt cooler, so that was good :) ) temps reached on a very very hot day 78*C but on a normal day 73*C tops. The benchmark score went from 2093 to 3006. So i would call that a quite big increase of performance :D .

Lan_d,

You make a good point. Should I just buy a 6800GT instead? I can save $100 doing that and that should hold me over until next year until the PCI-E jump. I am wondering though how much better the 6800GT is over a regular 6600 and how much worse it is from a 7800GS.

???

going from a 6600 to a 6800GS, i'd better wait and upgrade all the computer to pci-e. There will certainly be an improvement, but not worthwile

I guess I'll just overclock the crap out of this 6600 until it burns up. 6800Gts are still overpriced, 7800GS seems to suck, and the 6600 does everything I want except anti-aliasing.

Hopefully with the new memory coolers I can get the 6600 to 600mhz memory but that's really pushing it.

exactly!! that's what i'm doing, as i have the same card. I wont upgrade it until i have a decent system. I'm just saving my money for a complete upgrade.

hmmm.. $140.00 free shipping, AGP, better than 6600 (by a bit too), not a $300 dying 7800GS, and better than a 6800GT.

What does SM 3.0 do anyway? x850 pro donut support it but I don't knwo what it does. I play AoE III which has it but I really don't see what it does...

PC Wizard 2006. My card has the temp reader in the manufacturer driver package but not when I use nvidia's drivers.

Weird.
