I have an old Intel P4 Socket 423 1.3 Ghz. I know Intel switched to Socket 478 soon after the 423 came out. I want to eek a bit more performance out of my 423 board because I won't be (major) upgrading for atleast 6 months. So, what's the fastest P4 Socket 423 processor? Any help/resources you can point me to would be much appreciated. Oh, overclocking isn't an option since this is a Dell board :D (Okay.. so I was naive back in 2001 when I bought it! Yes, I'm using Rambus too.. ugh)

Thats about the best you're going to do. I'd say type in socket 423 in froogle.com. thats what I did. Good luck

Thank you! Is 1.8 the highest for 423? There are some 2.0 on ebay that say socket 423. Does anyone know for sure?

I guess youre better off with a radical upgrade to Conroe.

Nope, sorry, talking about older proc/board here. I won't be going Conroe until it has been out and tested for several months. I did look it up and apparently 2.0 Ghz is the fastest model for 423 pin. I'll pick one up for $30 on eBay. There's another option which involves a socket adapter.. but I don't feel like paying $250 for ancient technology. I just want a bit more performance for the time being.

Just hold out with your current crap; it's not worth spending anything on a socket 423 system with RDRAM. And hold onto the CPU and RAM after you upgrade; two examples of technological failures.

I've seen converters on the web that would allow you to use s478 processors.

EDIT: Something like this:

At the same time, this article suggests stability issues with converters.

Stability issues surrounding the use of a 423-pin-to-478-pin converter have not been widely discussed. If you decide to use a converter, you will need to fully understand chipset compatibility issues (or lack thereof) before installing a 423-pin-to-478-pin converter.

Why not start your upgrade now. ie geta conroe ready motherboard, pcie graphic card, ddr2 ram and a P4D805 processor.

When your ready to go conroe ditch the D805.

The 423 sockect cpus were very ordinary and I wouldn't watse any more money on another one.

Rambus fetches some good money on ebay. When you upgrade, you should sell it.

Well I can get a 2.0Ghz for $30 on e-bay. I think that's a pretty good upgrade from 1.3, lol. You're right about the techology failures.. meh... time to mod.

Yeah I've seen some.. but the only one that would fit my proprietary Dell board would end up costing me $50 without the new processor (really not new... meh).

It's not worth any upgrade this system, naaah!
With just $80 you can get a retail sempron 2800+ & a decent S754 mombo which perform on a par with an old 2.4-2.6 GHz P4.
Overclocked with stock cooler @ 2GHz this system runs cool and sometimes go head to head with a 3GHz P4 with HT.
It's the ultimate budget build. I put togeather something like this for a friend and he's ultra satisfied

Er.. nice idea, but in my case I would also need new RAM and PSU. And I'm not sure that my chassis would fit the 754 board because the Dell has a proprietary Intel board. It's really long. Another issue is the back panel for I/O ports, which isn't standard. So even if I went cheapy on those components, I'd be spending a lot more than $80.. and I also want to do somewhat of a video card upgrade. That is all way too much for eeking out a bit more performance when it will all be replaced with my new build a bit down the road.
