I have recently bought a samsung 250gb (Samsung SP2514N, 250GB, 7200rpm, 8MB, FDB, ATA133) hard disk. My mainboard is QDI Platinix 8, manufactured on 2002, and supports ultra ata 33/66/100 according to the manual.

System detects hard disk, but only 128 gb are shown, both in BIOS and Windows Xp SP2.
I guess it is a problem with addressing- 48-bit needed to show full capacity.

BIOS has the latest update, which has been released on 2002. I have tried enabling big lba in registry, installing intel application accelerator, but nothing helped, only 128 gb are shown.

Is there a solution of how to use all the space, make the windows xp to show it all?

I look forward to getting your responses,

Thank you in advance.

Bit confused, you mention the answer to the problem in your post. It certainly sounds like a 48bit addressing issue.

From the Samsung site...
Samsung

Which leads to the Microsoft site with an answer...
Microsoft

Good Luck.

I have downloaded that Q331958_WXP_SP2_x86_ENU.exe hotfix, but when I try to install it I get the message that 'Setup has detected that the Service Pack version of the system installed is newer than the update you are applying to it. You can only install this update on a computer with no Service Packs installed". So, no, the atapi.sys remained the same and its version is 5.1.2600.2180.

I'm just trying to find proof that your BIOS upgrade supports larger disks. The fact that your BIOS reports 128Gb is a bit suspicious.

Right, it looks like you've done everything correctly. However, the Intel Accelerator site says you'll need to install a third party program to gain access to the remain 128Gb. They recommend Partition Magic or Partition Commander. You may be able to get an evaluation copy via BitTorrents. Or have you already tried these?

Out of ideas, except to say that just double-check that the BIOS update does support disks that large. I couldn't find any details of what was in the update. Might even be worth contacting QDI for confirmation.

Why not just buy a PCI ATA controller card? They have their own BIOS, so you can use the full size of the drive. I've had great luck with Promise based cards.

I don't recommend using any kind of drive translation software to see the full size. You'll be screwed if you ever need to ghost or repair boot files.
