I'm sure I read somewhere that a crossover network can be extending like this:

1. Buy a hub
2. Plug the crossover into the hub's stack port
3. Plug other machines into the hub

Will this work? Or only with certain types of hub? Any recommendations, or should I just replace my crossover cable (it currently runs through mt attic where it is pinned to the roofing struts, and removing it may make the house fall down!)

Yup, it'll work. The 'stack' port is often reffered to as the "uplink" port

I have not yet begun to procrastinate.

What do you mean by a 'crossover network'?

If you have two computers connected with crossover cable and want use a hub to add more machines, then you dump the crossover and connect all the machines to the hub with standard cabling.

Please excuse me if I misunderstood your post.
