Can someone explain to me why Windows XP Home will not go into standby, nor
turn off the hard disk after the specified period of time? If there is a
piece of software of hardware keeping it from doing this, how do I find out
what it is? Thanks.

Hi Andy,

By trial and error. In these types of situations, you have to do it
piecemeal unless you can pinpoint the behavior change to a system change
(say you upgraded a driver, installed a system update, added hardware or
something of this nature). Run msconfig from the start/run prompt, use the
selective startup and diagnostic modes for this to make things easier.

Standby mode requires cooperation from the software and drivers that are
running at the time. If any one of them is not properly written to
support standby, it won't happen. Even if it does support standby, the
software can veto the request to go into standby.

On my computer, I can't go into standby if my TV software (WinTV) is
running.

If standby doesn't work even when no applications are running (including
stuff running in the system tray) then you might need to look for
updated drivers for things like your video and sound cards, and any
other special devices you might have.
