This is already a mute point because I've already made the purchase, but is this a good upgrade? I found this refurb on ATI through a couple threads posted here. I'm holding out for DX10, but need a bit more horse power than my 9800 pro to get me through the next 9mo to a year. This X800XL refurb was only $119 free shipping, and standard warranty so I figured "what the hell, why not."

As Raven said, big increase.

A couple examples:

Farcry 1280x1024 100% increase in framerates
9800pro 38.1 fps
X800XL 77.2 fps

Farcry 12x10 AA/AF Turn on the eye candy.... And the XL's lead grows.
9800pro 18.8 fps
X800XL 50.7 fps

Other games may vary as to the increase, but no doubt you'll have higher playable settings on the XL. A whole bunch more game results can be found in the link below.

Enjoy the card!

my x800xl is stable at 570/570 and also went to 600/600 but my shitty 16Amp powersupply failed.

Im getting a new one on wednesday, Enermax, and maybe I will be able to pass 600/600.

Check your card's bios to see what core it has

(Also I upgraded from a 9800pro as well... it fried... so fuck it :p )

It appears that I have no reason to pile on sicnce we all agree... you made an excellent upgrade. I did the nearly excact same one from a 9800 pro 128 to an x850xtpe. I will never regret it... that is until my PSU and motherboard downfall.

Just so you know, it was an AGP card on a 478 board.

...and in case you cared, it was a graphics card upgrade in December and a 2.6 to 3.6 prescott upgrade.

Oh, poor me! And to think that I paid near full price

Oh well, nice choice!

You almost made 600mhz core on an X800XL?? Thats quite something if you ask me...

Yes... Futureshop was selling x800xl's for 180$ for one week only...they ran out in like 3 days and then their price went to 350$ soon after... I went to Bestbuy across the street where they were selling the same card for 350$ and wouldn't budge form the price.

So I waited a while and chose someone who looked kind hearted... convinced him that a futureshop miles away had one card remaining... he sold me the 350$ card for 140$ because they had to beat the futureshop price.

Futureshop was selling R430 and Bestbuy was selling R420 with 1.6ns memory.

So I paid 140$ Canadian for something which overclocks much higher then my friends 400$+ x800xt

But as far as THIS thread is concerned, the R420 in the x800xl works great at the stock R430 speeds. Stock x800xl is a great upgrade and I suggest it to everyone. Maybe check the core and memory after you buy it... its like scratchin' a lottery ticket

What is the difference between the R420 and R430 core? Which one is it on the Ati clearance sale? Also, will I have any problems buying a refurbished card? Thanks.

R30 is meant for x800xl and I think GTO cards. It can only clock so far.

While R20 is meant for x800xt cards and x800xtpe I believe. It is made with a low-k process. I don't know what that is, but it is good.

My X800XL refurb just came today and I was surprised to see more than just a bare card.

R430 is 110nm and cheaper to produce. Read about it here. The r520, 523, & 580 are 130nm low-K. R430 doesn't reach the same clock speeds because of no low-K. Learn more about low-K here or just google TSMC low-K.

Wow. Thats exactly what I did 6 months ago. Upgraded my 2 boxes from 9800pros to an x800xl and and x850xt.

The x800xl is a better buy than an x850pro as it has 16 pipes vs. the pro's 12.

Good deal :D
