I would like to add another DC to an existing domain in Window 2000.

When I run <dcpromo.exe> it only has the option of removing the current
Active Directory, but there is no option that offers me to add another Domain
Controller. Is there a different way of adding a DC to an existing domain??

Let say that you have a domain called: ny.microsoft.com. It is a Windows
2000 domain controller with name nyserver1.ny.microsoft.com. Now you want to
add an additional domain controller to this domain. These are the
requirements:

1. New Server
2. Install Windows 2000 Server Standard or Enterprise Edition with name:
nyserver2
3. Run "dcpromo.exe" on this server, not on the domain controller
(nyserver1.ny.microsoft.com) for domain "ny.microsoft.com"

Note: When you run "dcpromo.exe" the first time, it is installing active
directory and creating a domain controller for a new domain or an additional
domain controller for an existing domain. when run "dcpromo.exe" again, it
removes active directory and the server is no longer a domain controller for
a domain or an existing domain with multiple domain controllers. You can
only have a domain controller when "Active Directory" installed.

?! It sounds like you are executing this on the current domain controller.
To add an additional Domain Controller, see this link:

How to promote and demote domain controllers in Windows 2000:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/238369/EN-US/

Creating additional domain controllers in Windows 2003:
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/WindowsServ/2003/standard/proddocs/en-us/Default.asp?url=/resources/documentation/WindowsServ/2003/standard/proddocs/en-us/promoting_replicas.asp

Before adding the additional dc, you may also want to check-out this link to
verify the first dc is functioning:
How to verify an active directory installation (w2k):
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=298143

(w2k3):

Hope this helps,
Chris

You must NOT run it on the EXISTING DC, but on
a "regular" Server which you wish to promote to a
new (additional) DC.

Pick another server in that domain.

DCPromo is a "toggle" it adds then removes,
then adds a DC each time it is run on a particular
server.

run dcpromo on the server you are adding, not the current dc - have the
server point to first one for dns prior to running dcpromo
