I am planning on building my first custom rig, well i already have everything picked out on new egg, all i have to do is hit the checkout button. well i heard that with the release of core 2 that AMD will be dropping there prices on there current cpu's, now should i wait until the end of the month to order or just get it now. Also would anyone know how much of a price drop?

WAIT! AMD's prices are going to go down %45 or so. I would recommend getting the Core2Duo though...

July 24th is the scheduled day for the price cuts, and the amount varies greatly between processor lines, and speeds.

Where are these price quotes from and when will they hit?

The Athlon 64 prices have been at those reduced quotes for almost a month now.

Does anyone know if WinXp would need to be reinstalled if you go from a 939 64 3000 to a 64 X2 3800? My Mobo is compatible with the dual cores. I just don't know if I want the headache of reinstalling the OS to take advantage of the 2nd cpu.

The 5000+ went from $799.00 to 809.00 over night on Newegg. Thats a price increase not decrease. The 4800 went from $699.00 to 729.00. I don't get it. The 4800 is out of stock this morning as well.

Prices on Newegg, and probably any other retailer, will vary from day to day. I'll see 5% variation on items, up and down, over the period of a few days. They do that to keep you on your toes. You'll say, oh wow, the price just went down $20, I'm going to order it. Then it will go back up and then down even lower in a few days.

Correct, and I'm not so sure it isn't the same with XP, but I've never tested it myself with adding a new CPU, or a second processor for SMP.

Well I seen two post on this message board where they have said all they did was install the new dual core cpu and XP was able to use it with no problems. I guess I will see in a few weeks if the price drops low enough.
