accordidng to the wild rumours circulating aftet conroe is released, the X2 4600+ and the E6600 (the 2.40Ghz conroe) will both be about $300, so which should I buy, bearing in mind I want it entirely for gaming.

I'm honestly amazed that this thread hasn't progressed to death threats yet. I guess most people have already got that out of their system!

If you're building a new system, I'd suggest you go for the conroe. You may have to wait for a cheaper motherboard and for the processor to be in stock ( I have no idea), but it will perform very well, especially when considering the price.

I'd only consider getting an X2 if you already have a 939 system. That is the path I am taking, but if I was building a new rig, it would be conroe for sure.

It has been said before in this thread, but I would get the Conroe.

If you are looking for a processor costing ~$200 or more, get Conroe.
If you are looking for a processor costing ~$150 or less, get AMD.

It's not really that simple, if you are looking at upgrading to Conroe later get a cheap intel dual core, that goes without saying.

The only thing I could think of to add is that it apears the Conroe will OC like crazy. If you dont do that then the difference would break down to if you have a 939 system or not. The other thing you may be thinking about is if you just have to have the faster of the two. 99% seem to think Conroe will be faster in most aps :) So there you have it the 4600 is a great chip if you already have the system to pop it in !

Yeah~~4600+ x2 will be worth getting if it is $100 comparing to E6600's $300.

You pay any more for that CPU when going up against that Conroe, it's just a waste of money~~~~and its not just for gaming, its for everything you can do on a PC!!!!!

If you're getting a new powerful machine, Conroe is the way to go.....

Since you're bulding it to play games, maybe you concentrate on getting a decent video card instead.....

The Conroe E6300 will have a street price of $210 - $220. It will have the same performance of a X2 4400+ (or faster) in most applications. When converting video to DivX using VirtualDub, the E6300 has the same performance as the FX-62.

Gaming benchmarks basically shows that a lowly E6300 with a stock speed of just 1.86GHz can perform almost just as well as the FX-60. Gaming benchmarks for a CPU uses minimum graphics settings since CPUs are being compared, not video cards.

Click on the link I provided in my post above to see the benchmarks I am refering to.

Also, the Conroe E6600 will cost $316 in lots of 1,000. Street price will likely be between $360 - $380 per CPU.
