I have just built a new PC running windows 98 OEM edition for my supervisor. It has a built-in ethernet card on the motherboard. It seems to be unable to have any contact with the Server which is running Windows NT 4.0. I used Small Business Server 4.5 to create a "magic disk" which is just a floppy that you use to automat the configuration of the setup of all the network settings on a new workstation. After I used the magic disk on the new workstation, it seems to be unable to connect to the network at all. I cannot even get past the logon screen in the beginning.

I first thought that there is an ethernet card problem, but there is no hardware errors under Device Manager under System Properties. Still, I reinstalled all the latest drivers that I can find on the internet. I restarted the computer and I still could not get pass the logon screen. It still shows the old message saying that it cannot find a domain server.

The next thing I tried was to change the connection. Originally to test the new workstation, I just simply switched the RJ-45 connector from another online workstation to the new one. I then thought my connection problem might lay here because ethernet is not swappable. So I tried to set its own connection using a new cable fromm the hub. However, when I plug in the new RJ-45 connetor into the hub all the transmission orange light of the hub went out. When I unplugged the new connector, the hub came back on as if nothing happened. I tried to insert the new cable into the hub with it already connected to the new workstation and without connecting to anything, but everytime it seems to totally disrupt the hub.

I don't want to restart the server because it is a really big hassle and I feel it might not solve the problem. I am inexperienced in networking, so I am looking for any suggestions that might help me. I am also asking if anyone would offer good URLs that give detailed tutorials on small networks.

Workstation Specs:
P4 2.4GHz 400FSB
ASUS P4BGL-MX/522/LAN motherboard
40GB 7200RPM HD
1.44 Floppy
CD-RW

Network Specs:
10BaseT
TCP/IP Protocol

Thanks for any help.

That hub problem reminds me when i tried to connect NIC with full duplex settings to a HUB which wasnt capable to handle it. Cehck the hubs documentation about the leds meaning, and also try set the nic to auto or half duplex mode.

Umm btw, what did you mean by "ethernet is not swappable"?
