AA and AF settings

I've always been confused re: what the better way to set image quality in games is :oops: Been trying to figure this out for some time (I will use nVIDIA and Coolbits as an example):

Using Coolbits you can unlock advanced image quality settings in nVIDIA control panel and set AA, AF, Image Quality and many other parameters via Display Properties. Then, when you start a game you also get options to set level of AA, AF, etc. How does this work if you set 4xAA + 16xAF in both Display Properties and in the game? Does one override the other or they are cumulative and you get something like 8xAA and 32xAF?

your control panel will override the ingame
cause in catalyst on AA and AF you can select it to how much image quality you want or select let application decide
