I was wondering what kind of ram Conroe supports. I don't need DDR2 correct? I looked and couldn't find anything, but maybe I didnt look in the right spot. Thanks in advance!

This question has already been ansered a few days ago. Crashman will explain.
I seem to be the only one here who cares, but I'm going to tell you something that most other people simply refuse to believe: Synchronous RAM for the 1066MHz bus is DDR2-533, aka PC2-4200, ie, the slow stuff.

But wait you say, that's only half as fast? Nonsense. 1066MHz FSB runs at a 266MHz clock rate. DDR2-533 runs at a 266MHz clock rate. But wait you say, it's still only half the bandwidth because of Intel's Quad Data Rate FSB? Nonsense, that's what dual-channel is made to fix.

So why do higher-speed modules win benchmarks? Latency. Think about it, using DDR2-800 CAS4 as an example: a 400MHz cycle is 2.5ns, so that CAS4 has a latency of 10ns. If you compare that to DDR2-533 CAS3, well, the same math says its over 11ns. That sounds small right? The difference in benchmarks isn't that big either, 200 3D Marks is only 3% of 6000 3D marks.

So quit worrying about 1066MHz and start worrying about latency. Corsair has some PC2-6400 CAS3 you might like.

TY! But seriously, new ATI and Nvidia chipsets both look excellent. We might see some of the lowest mulitpliers in a long time if people start maxing out at 4x375 for the FSB.

Soooooo what if I bought some OCZ platinum PC 3200, besides from being an apparently large bottleneck, would it work? Cuz, I already bought it thinking of an Opteron system. I never opened it, so maybe i oculd return it or sell it. But I dont know what to do.

Not the AM2, I know I'd need DDR2, but when I bought the ram I was thinking I'd get the opteron, cuz I wanted to have it built before July. But money didnt come. So now that coroe's like 2 weeks away I figure why not. But would the Conroe work with the PC3200? Non DDR2?

You can typically return unopened items within 30 days, depends on where you bought it from. But you will most likely have to pay a 15% restocking fee.

If you attempt to sell the DDR 3200 RAM, then just accept the fact that you will need to sell it for less than you bought it for. Even if it is brand new.
