A little while ago I noticed that the keyboard (or whatever input panel
I selected) was no longer attached to the bottom bar. Whenever I bring
the panel up the keyboard window floats free. I can move it around by
dragging it around.
This isn't such a problem, but whatever has caused it to happen, also
occasionally resizes the window, which can be a real pain.
Now, what registry hack or piece of software enables this
'functionality'? To tell the truth, I haven't messed with the registry,
and the only additional apps I've put on are Age of Empires, Pocket
Informant, PIToday, and a bunch of e-Book readers.
However, there is a possibility that a technical support person at my
previous company messed with the registry when they were fixing a
battery issue on the machine.
Any help with this problem would be greatly appreciated.

I would have thought that too, except he mentioned Pocket Informant. Is it
possibly the difference between the Keyboard Soft Input Panel and the
keyboard that is accessible from the Transcriber SIP. The latter does float.

The problem is that *all* the input panels - keyboard, block recogniser
and letter recogniser now float. There are no immediately obvious
options that appear to fix it...

Gotta tell you I have never heard of this happening, or of a hack to make it
happen. It actually would seem a blessing if it weren't for the side effects
you mention. Only thing I could recommend is a hard reset, but that is
pretty severe, as you need to make sure all your data is backed up and you
are prepared to rebuild your unit from scratch. By backup I don't mean the
whole thing, because if you did a full backup, hard reset, and restore, you
would likely restore the problem.
You could do a back and hard reset, and see if it solves the issue (I'm
confident it would) and then restore if it doesn't. I would be prepared to
rebuild though if something goes awry.

Yup. It's looking as if a hard reset and manual rebuild are going to
have to be the way to go. Another reason why this is sound advice is
that this might be the symptom of something more serious I haven't
noticed yet.
Then again, it is weaning me off using the input panels and using
Caligrapher instead...

I think you will like Calligrapher. You might note that it has a pop-up
keyboard that is slideable on purpose.
