Networked HP G85xi not printing

I have an HP G85xi on a network via the proper parallel cable to a
(Cisco) Linksys EPSX3 print server. I can ping the printer by FQDN or
by its IP address. The copier and fax functions work fine. But if I try
and send a print job, either raw text or some type of formatted output
to it from a FreeBSD machine using lpd and apsfilter the G85 will go
through the motions of printing but the paper will have no ink on it.
The print head will track and the the paper will advance a line at a
time, but no ink. Onboard diagnostics print output beautifully. I can
also send output to an HP LaserJet 4Plus with a jetdirect card without
issues so I am assuming my machine and network are not the problem
here. Does anyone have any experience with this particular printserver?
