AMD Athlon 64 X2 3600+ to be priced in range of $139-160

Published on June 29, 2006

In an attempt to compete against Intel's plan to offer dual-core processors at competitive prices, AMD will add the Socket-AM2 Athlon 64 X2 3600+, a 2 GHz Athlon 64 X2 CPU that contains 512 kB level-two (L2) cache, in the fourth quarter of 2006, with the new part to be priced in the $139-160 range, according to sources at Taiwan motherboard makers. AMD will drop Athlon 64 X2 prices to compete with Intel Core 2 Duo

Quote :

Sunnyvale (CA) - A spokesperson for AMD told Tom's Hardware Guide Wednesday afternoon to expect AMD to announce a substantial price drop in its highest performance desktop processors, including Athlon 64 X2. The price drop should be announced at or about the time that Intel announces the release of its next-generation Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Extreme processors - an announcement which many say is imminent.

I guess we are back to the old days - the days when AMD's ONLY advantage was PRICE!
This is sad - the only way AMD is to kill get the Core 2 Due or Extreme is by getting itself some new FX Dual Core Class with very low power consumption - or maybe unleashing its amazing Opteron technology to the home desktop (remember when some Sempron models were Athlon 64 with less cash - cash memory and cash price!).

Lets face it, we all know Intel - Price is not their strong side... its easy to say "we will out perform them with cost-performance efficiency" but would that be true? This I doubt.

I think that the test done by Tom's First Benchmarks: Conroe vs. FX-62 is self evident and proves my point. Even if the Conroe costs 700$ it will still out perform - or at least give better cost-performance than that of the 1K + $ AMD's biggest and most impressing weapon!

I was always a fan of AMD's ... sad to see it sink like this - unless it pulls something out of its hat - and I expect it will...

Just a quick question, have you seen the Core 2 price list?

I'm going to go ahead and say no...

True - no i didn't - thus I said

If my friend is a conditional!

And that came to say in other words:
Even IF Intel bombard us with such a high price, it will still be more cost and energy efficient (as claimed for energy) than the BEST AMD CPU - i.e. FX 62

Meaning - AMD will never be able to compete with Intel even by killing its prices - coz it will never be as efficient (cost-performance and energy wise) as Intel even with its best CPUs

The conditional is to show that the AMD's move is wrong and helpless. And I am all for what you said:

If (and this is conditional) were to drop prices to compete Price/peformance/watt then the FX-62 would need to sell for close to 150 bucks

- my point exactly!

Ehem

There is no "conditional" needed, the pricing has been known for months

made you think and interact didn't it!? :P :P

maybe next time i will put it differently ... seems like numbers make people distracted from the main issue here

I don't think anyone seriously believed AMD would be able to keep the FX-62 at its current price, there's just no way it could have done that and survived. This is just a win-win cenario for us consumers. Lower prices on Intel and AMD cpu prices = good.

A single Opteron is no different than a single Athlon 64 that has 1mb cache running at the same speed. There is nothing amazing about it untill you run 2 or more Opterons. But that will defeat the price/performance purposes.

It had to be done, Why buy a inferior FX chip (not really but when compared to a Core 2 Dua it is) when at third of the price point you can get a faster, cooler, more efficient chip.

Only down fall is that Intel and SLI dont mix, well atleast Intel doesnt want it to mix. But Nvidia is going ahead and making the boards anyways. Intel need to improve thier outlook on desktop boards or risk loosing sales in that department. At the moment I only see intel as a chip manufacture where they actually do a lot of other things too, just not as good as others do it.

Just a note..... When Intel announced the core 2, they announced the price and that it would be EXTREMELY aggressive. I think EVERYONE was suprised at how low Intel is introducing the prices at.

When it comes right down to it, core2 prices aren't all that different from the northwood prices.
Sure, you are getting two cores, but then again Intel has done 2 die shrinks since woody. The production costs must be fairly close.
Since my old max price was ~ $150, I'm looking forward to a return to reasonable pricing.

Ok I m looking at this from another point. I always notice who ever has the crown they tend to have the higher prices. I'm not saying now. For the crown changing from Amd to Intel. But what I'm Getting at is Intel Will rase prices to for faster chips Untel 1 both companys have about the same speed cpu. 2 If amd wins the crown back. So right now would be a good time to buy chips.

Well, some Intel fanboys did believe that..
I said that AMD would seriously slash prices once Conroe is on the market, and they kept on blabbing with "FX-62 at 1000+$ etc etc".
It's obvious that your 1000$ CPU won't sell if outperformed by a 350$ one from your competitor..

AMD single core is cheaper and faster than any P4 single core.
Who has to lower prices? Intel not AMD.

X2 is more costly to manufacture than 9xx because of the true Dual core vs copy paste one.
8xx is real cheap because no one wants one of those.

True Intel dual core vs AMD true dual core is:
