I wonder if you can help me.
I am after a free a map of the UK for my Pocket PC
I want to be able to search for a town/city then be shown on a map of the UK
where it is, and if possible I would like to be able to zoom in to see more
details and place names in the area. Basically I suppose I am after a road
map of the UK.
Does anyone know where I can find this free for my Pocket PC?
Any help or information will be gratefully received.

What you need is the OS map. I do not think that it will be got for free due
to the OS restrictions. Anquet maps can be installed to the PPC but as they
are licensed by the OS it is not cheap.
Regards, Kenneth.

Now all you need is Streets & Trips (about $25 so going on £12-15GBP
top end). The desktop version comes with the PPC version included, so
you're then good to go.

Actually what you need is the European version of Streets and Trips which is
called Autoroute. I don't know what the going rate is in the UK for that.
S&T is pretty cheap over on this side of the pond.
Unfortunately I don't think there is a free program that does what you want.

Dear Mr. Miles,
Thank you for contacting Microsoft® about purchasing Pocket Streets 2005 in
UK.
It is not possible to purchase the US version of Microsoft AutoRoute
ExpressT - called Microsoft Streets and Trips - within the UK or Europe and
we cannot ship this product directly to UK or Europe from either the US or
Canada.
The only way to obtain this is either within the US or Canada. Under the
conditions of the Licence Agreement for this product you would then be
entitled to take it to UK or Europe for your own personal use.
Please be aware that this is not a restriction imposed by Microsoft, but is
in place so that the product complies with the Copyrights, Designs and
Patents Act 1988. Further information on this is available at
http://www.hmso.gov.uk/acts/acts19 [...] 8_en_1.htm
I trust this information is of benefit to you. If you have further
enquiries, please feel free to contact us on 0870 60 10 100 or email
2way@microsoft-contact.co.uk. The lines are open from 8.00am to 6.00pm
Monday to Friday. Telephone traffic is at its lowest early in the morning.
Regards,
John Opabola

That was confusing. MS sells two almost identical products that differ in
the area of the world covered.
Streets and Trips, which covers the US and Canada and can only be purchased
there, and
Autoroute, which covers the UK and Europe and can only be purchased there.
Beyond the area of the world covered by the map data these two product are
the same. If you are in the UK and want UK maps, get Autoroute.

Pocket Streets is the PPC Client that allows you to view maps created in S&T
or Autoroute or those made available on MS's website. S&T/Autoroute is the
full PC application that also includes the PPC Client.

Right. If you buy Streets and Trips or Autoroute you get a copy of Pocket
Streets for 'free'. Pocket Streets does not come with any maps. To get maps
for Pocket Streets you either download them from MS, out of ones they have,
or you create them from the desktop application.

Yes, that's a nuisance.
On advice from the group I bought S&T from ebay at a good price and had it
shipped to the UK. Amazon.com etc; no chance.
Seems a comprehensive program and a big help in planning a trip when in the
US.
Of course I haven't arrived anywhere yet so that's the test.

On 21 Dec 2004, "david" <m463geslollipop@ntlworld.com> pondered an

S&T is really designed for PCs and Laptops. There's no trip planning
software at all in the PPC software. You can take snapshots of maps and
download them to the PPC, and you can access points of interest and put
pushpins with your own lables on it. But no routes, maps can't cover a
wide area for long distance trips, and there are no "distance views"
possible (like major highways only and a larger territory).
Another annoying thing is that major roads aren't always named in the
PPC map view. You have to tap on the road to see the name or really
zoom in on it.
It would be nice if the PPC version had 1/5th the functionality that
the PC/Laptop version has. I use it all the time on the PC. But it
doesn't. Until I can afford iNavigator or something like it, I just
have to print my maps/routes out on paper.
