First MMM admits he's wrong, now this from the Inquirer.

It truly appears as if the apocalypse is coming.
Or maybe MMM admited he was wrong only after reading this story from his prefered source.

A student of history, one who studies to learn and understand, will discover that throughout all that has been recorded and written, many an evil person have sought power and glory. Such as that may be, recent figures such as Stalin, Mussolini and Hitler to all those in between dating back to the dawn of recorded history have likely found themselves, ultimately in a location that is less than desirable -- if you subscribe to such philosophically based religious beliefs....

Today, they rest much more comfortably for today, however brief it may be, Hell has had a cool spell....

Charlie actually likes Conroe:

Conroe with Crossfire is worth it.

Not since the 939 A64 hit the market has there been such a huge step forward in CPU power. The things my previous box could be made to chug on, Oblivion mostly, this simply powers through. I didn't have enough time to beat it into the ground, but the time I spent with Conroe showed that it was clearly the fastest box I have ever used.

Since late last year, people have been feeding me numbers, and hinting at what was coming, Conroe delivers on all that and more. Due to the disconnect between measurement and perception, you can't feel things that are measurable at times, it tends to take a big bang to catch a jaded eye like mine. Conroe did that.

From what I have seen, all the rumors were true. There is no cheating, no trick drivers, no baked setups, or anything underhanded, it is just faster. Several potential AMD responses have crossed my inbox, but until they show up and are independently measurable, Conroe is the fastest thing you can buy, and completely lives up to the hype

I guess he isn't desperate for potential stories, as usually he likes to feed the rumour mill. Maybe retracting the rumour about RHT hurt a little, as he swallowed some pride.

Mike was trolling before the IDF benchmarks, you just have to look at the thread for toms preview of AM2.

Incase you're reading mike it would seem those benchmarks were very accurate.

I'm kinda new here. Who's this MMM guy?

MMM is an acronym for madmodmike, who before Conroe, was a good forum contributor and a regular visitor. He was very knowledgable about AMD and the history of the industry in general, though he was sometimes colorful.

When Conroe IDF benchmarks hit, it became apparent that he was having a hard time coping with the concept that Intel would release a CPU that significantly out performed AMD, as such any discussion with him usually ended in some vulgar reference to one's intelligence and a final insult of being a fanboi. It got so bad he was banned. He returned reincarnated and verified under a few accounts.

GottaloveIMC is his most recent one, so he is still around. NOTE: I have no direct proof of this but the behavior is very consistent so it is my opinion -- a few others agree obviously.

There are a few different types of people in this forum --

There are the AMD/Intel fans (not fanboys), these are individuals that have a brand preference and those preferences are based on good reasons. However, they are not so emotionally attached to the CPU that fair and reasonable analysis and conclusions are usually accepted. As examples, I personally have a great deal of respect for K8MAN, Turpit, Linux_0, TechnologyCoordinator all of which are AMD fans or lean/use AMD, but carry polite and meaningful discussions, bring out good points back them up with good data and such, and help provide a great picture of the landscape through honest and calm adverserial debate --- sometimes heated, but most always productive. These are the ones that can go so far as to argue for various things or features or technologies of the companies they typcially do not use or wish to use. I like posts like this as it give me a personal chance to compliment this, and thank them for their contributions --- I myself prefer Intel products, as does a few others.

Then there are the AMD/Intel fanbois, these are the group that ignore data if it does not suit their preconcieved notion of what they want to be true -- I will not list names here but you can spot them pretty easily enough.

Then there are those who are simply fans of the technology they objectively go either way, pointing out all the good and bad stuff. Lt.Commander_Data is a prime example, I compliment this fella's too, he has a really great grasp on architectural items that has taught me a lot as well --- watch for, and read carefully, posts from Lt.Commander_Data, you will learn a great deal about computing in general.

JackAnd on that note....Welcome to the jungle.

Hmm anandtech does conroe benchmarks on the 7th, jack signs up on the 8th, conclusion? Jack works for intel. :P

I think hes finally realised that they're real and no amount of spin can make it an AMD victory in any way besides price.

One thing I did do recently at work is show my buddies (we are all scientists) the "Woodcrest fails to impress" post by 9-inch, we got a big laugh (remember my response "Your ability to completely misinterpret the data astounds me." ) Now, when we get any anomolous results --- we simply (jokingly) make the conlusion we want it to be and call it the "9-inch affect" it always get's a chuckle.

Only improvement I could make would be to fit the word "vitriol" in there some how.

  Well, I did see the Anandtech report and nearly fell out of my chair, but alas --- I do not work for Intel, I do have grad school buddies who do but have not heard from them for a while.... so don't ask, I do not have a connection to know how much Core 2 will be available :) ....

This is serious... 8O 8O
The Inquirer admitting AMD defeat??? Wow... 8O 8O

And it's true, these are peaceful days, without those great flaming wars.
BM, GottaLoveIMC (MMM??) and few other tried to "lift" AMD from the "abyss" it's sunk right now, but the facts have overwhelmed them. Not no mention 0nw3d them too.

I still have some faith in AMD, but my decisions about buying hardware are simple: The best I can get for my money. Right now, that's Core 2 Duo.

LOL.. I thought it was funny to read the article seeing all the problems he discribed in putting a system together.

Almost got sick of laughing/reading everything, so I scrolled down from the middle of it, to the final paragraph:

I suppose he wanted us to feel the drama he was going through to finally got to the point. Gawd I think the final paragraph should have been the total article.
