Hello.

My father had a stoke a few years ago and his reading isn't all that good
anymore. However, he still would like to know what is going on - just so he
can get angry at The Daily Mail I think - and how stupid their reporters
are.

Anyways. He is not technical at all. However I would like to get him
something that could read out the days news (doesn't have to be the Daily
Mail) that would be simple for him to use.

Money is no object really. It would have to be something very simple to
use.

Ideally something with a WiFi connection that could connect to the computer
upstairs or the inetrent directly (I could get them a WiFi hub and a route
no problem). But is there a program that could send this electronic paper
to his PDA so he can sit and listen to it...and have it send it there
automatically everyday at say 9:00 am.

Hopefully it would just read out the categories first - like headlines,
sport, finanace.

When he chooses one of these categories then it could read out the headlines
and have 5 big nembers appear down the screen then its says

press 1 for man rescues kitten from tree.

press 2 for tony blair treips up slightly.

press 3 for more Princess Diana stuff.

press 4 for more middles east blat.

press 5 for more headlines.

So he just presses the number and then has a rewind, fast forward, back to
previous menu, pause button on the screen.

Am I just dreaming or is there a combination of stuff out there that could
do this?

I would have to set everything up so he doesn't have to even think about
things and just has big buttons on the screen maybe with the atricle so he
can watch it read to him and see the pictures.

Like 5 see through buttons down the side so you can still see the words and
pictures in the background.

Thanks.

As far as i see it you got two routes.
PDA and Tablet PC

PDA: get something like a T3 or T5 that rotates to landscape. I would say
get a palm os device as they crash less.
Get a free account from avantgo, and select the channels he wants(You can
get the times, and the guardian for free!).
Buy a sandisk wifi card and get the router etc. to set up the network.

In all should cost you about £300 pounds if you go a T3

Tablet pc

Buy a tablet pc, cheapest will cost you about 800 quid. Once again set up a
wifi network, and then make a list of favourites. Put them all on the
desktop and make the icons big.
This will set u back a grand

Pros and Cons
The PDA method will leave you with some spare change, but the resolution on
the pda's can't touch that of a full size pc.(320 x 480 vs 1024 v 800, u
decide!). The PDA solution might need a pc to work. If you get the pc u
could get the text "massive and could do stuff like email, and become a real
net surfer, lol.

hope that was useful.

you might want to look into :
Windows XP Plus! Digital Media Edition: Sync & Go for Pocket PC
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp [...] rch18.mspx
it works similar to avantgo, but it syncs audio and video, rather than just
text, you just select which news/info source you want to get info from and
it will load video and audio of news stories from various sources to your
device when you sync, I believe it evens gives you the option to play one
after the other in order, or you can jump around manually. you are limited
to the info sources they provide, but it might be enough to keep dad in the
"know"

good luck

Think the PDA sounds more attractive then it can be his phone too and he
will be more familiar with that.

Well, its getting him to sit down in front of the thing. He is quite stuck
in his ways. Gets up, goes downstairs sits in the front room or if its
sunny sits in the conservatory while my mother brings him in his breakfast,
tea and the paper.

I can't see them wanting a comuter in the conservatory or lounge really.
Plus even if I did show him where to click on he wouldn't use it.

If the device is also his phone he will have some sense of 'his-ness' about
it and will become familiar with it. He can even send a text message now!
I never thought he would be able to but he did.

Cheers anyways.

Think about it. You're saying his reading isn't all that good anymore,
and then asking him to do his news browsing on a tiny screen. PDA should
be ruled out, phone should certainly be ruled out. That leaves you with
a tablet PC, which was an excellent suggestion from another poster. The
problem I see would concern the use of his hands following stroke-- is
his writing recognizable enough or his hand/eye coordination good enough
for touchscreen input modalities? If not, a plain old laptop is your
best bet.

I may be out of line in saying this, but have you considered going there and
reading to your father yourself? My father passed away a few years back,
and I would today trade my iPaq, my PC, my wifi router and cable internet
for a year for 30mins with him now. Its not always convenient, the valuable
things in life rarely are. Technology has its place...my father was 24hrs
from death and I sat with him, his mind fuzzy and eyes dim and unable to
read. I pulled out my iPaq, turned the screen up bright and showed him
pictures of my mother/his wife, the kids etc. He couldnt comprehend the
device he was holding, but he could see the pictures clearly, and was amazed
& touched....being there tho was a memory I wouldnt trade for anything.

Get him a sony digital walkman. Seriously, the headphones can be turned up

If you are close to someone with a walkman turned up real loud it is
annoying. Very annoying. It is far from bothering anyone else. Try public
transport and there's often people doing what you are advocating-
anti-social behaviour.

His eye site is fine! His reading though is becoming more and more of an
effort for him though which is why I want to do this.

Its easy enough for him to press 1- 5 on a pda screen and also its very
portable - which a laptop isn't. I mean laptops are portable - but would
you want to carry one around the house whilst changing a light bulb or
whatever else! Even a tablet pc wouldn't fit in his pocket.

I don't really want him to do his news browsing on a tiny screen. I want it
to read him the headlines and tell him what number to press for each
headline. Thats hardly doing your news browsing on a PDA! He wouldn't even
need to look at the screen except to press the correct, large button.

And when he knew where the buttons were he wouldn't even need to look at the
screen at all.

He won't be doing any writing on it but he can press buttons. He can text
ok enough.

I'll give you his address and you can pop around then.... ;)

I do take your point though but he's my dad. And like many dads he is hard
to talk to or with. He is good at talking at people though and this just

Coupla thoughts here from someone who has gone through this several
times in the last decade.

Whatever you do, do it quickly. In addition to the reletless progress
of age, getting any new process into "muscle memory" is critical as the
ability to do so is diminishing.

In my case, I watched my proceeding to provide some tech solutions for
her age problems cross paths in a very short time to the point that
there was nothing I could provide that she could use. Also spent some
very frustrating time with friends with whom I made incorrect
assumptions about what they would be able to achieve on their end...
i.e. "pressing buttons"

You should run some trials immediately with something simple such as a
portable radio with programmable buttons to confirm that control is
possible.

>> RSS? <<

First to admit I know almost nothing about this simply because I have
not had the time to sit down and learn it.

There are several RSS clients for the PPC... for sites that offer news
subscriptions, this might meet your needs.

>> satellite radio <<

Don't even know if you have it there, but they now have portable
receivers which offer a number of "news only" broadcasts.

This approach with a wireless headphone might be an option as well...
i.e. a large easily controlled receiver or something that you can
program to a usable remote.

>> windows media edition <<

This would give you the ability to use a desktop to feed a monitor/tv/audio

Keep responding and I'll keep thinking... think this thread is very
important... will be there soon myself and perhaps I'll have time to set
up my own solutions before the fact.

I think you are right. This thread is more than the usual

'what blutooth works with this pda'

or 'some gps software bug'

This is actually a thread that will have an impact on someones life.

If this this day and age I cannot provide for my father something that
speaks the news headlines to him and some way for him to select the story he
wants to hear - that is also portable and will fit in his pocket.

My father also likes to walk to the pub 5 mins down the road. If there is a
quiet moment, he could whip something out and read/have it read to him.

He could also show it to his cronies down there and he'd be the gadget king!
Massive bragging rights!

I am thinking of getting the SPV M2000 myself in 3 days time and I could
test it all and get it working first on that.

Its also about time he had a new phone - the bigger buttons would be nice on
the screen too for him. Also my mother could use it when she visits my
brother if I put some GPS software on it and a bluetooth receiver in her
car.

Heck - she might even get on of her own.

Do we have voice recognition yet for this? Maybe my dad could just say 5 or
2? Like I say, he can press buttons ok.

Mind you though - the stroke affected his voice a little bit so he sometimes
slurrs a little - more so after he has been to the pub.

Rememeber also that this affects all the family as well. If my dad is happy
my mother can relax and they will probably argue less.

I mean that if we cannot find a good solution for him then all the techie's
can shove their bluetooth headsets where the sun don't shine and I will sell
my computer, house, car and go live in the woods because technology doesn't
work!

I shy away from radio news because you cannot select the next story - there
are no pictures and he might like to hold the PDA and read along with the
voice. I think I would do that too to be honest. Just listening doesn't
let in sink in very well for some reason.

I know he won't be keen on any headphones or anything around or in his ears
because - well because he is my dad and I just know what he likes and
doesn't like. He's quite an old fashioned guy really and likes his routine.

Thanks for your response bev and any free stuff that I KNOW you MVP's have
feel free to send my way for er...erm...testing!

Have you heard the term "Urban Myth?"

Seriously, MVP's do get awards on different levels, but the amount pales
in comparison to the beliefs of those of you who might be future mvp's

If one took a pencil to it, most mvp's would probably report much less
than 50cents/hour on the time they invest in this, other forums and
other related activities... think mine calculates out to less than
10cents/hour... let's see two ppcs, one nice piece of ppc hardware, a
basket of nice, but inexpensive trinkets, a few trades from other mvps
divided by 4.5 years of multiple hours of daily responses equals...

That's not why most of us are here, it's problems such as yours which
justify our time.

>> Voice... <<

If that's a requirement, check with resources for visually impaired.
You need to know that there might not be any acceptable voice (speaking
text) solution specific to the ppc, especially coupled with other
impairments, but there are probably sites that have audio news
reading... for example, http://www.npr.org/programs/morning/ where the
page has a blurb plus an audio link.

>>RSS, Media Edition <<

Surprised you didn't respond to those specific solution suggestions

>> Lighten up for Gods sake! <<

Curious, how do you repond when someone calls you a liar?

>> German <<

Think you probably elevated yourself to the top of most responder's
filter lists... emphasis on the term "you" You have also done so in
record time in a forum that sometimes approaches a thousand posts a day.

You will have to work very hard to not use PPC software created by
German authors, a number of who are active, skilled, top level
responders here.

Since you are soliciting help, it might be wise to take responsibility
for your words as this is a diverse community populated by participants
who originate from every corner of the globe, most of whom have learned
that you cannot profit here holding, much less trumpeting bias against
those who are dontating their time and skills for free here in order to
help people such as yourself solve the needs that they have with
pocketpc's and other problems that impact life in general.

It will also be interesting to find if "apology" is part of your vocabulary.

Sincerely,
Beverly Howard

Judging by your attitude, you probably will never understand just how
offensive and insulting you have been. You really owe him an apology, as

There is an old saying "you need to pick your battles" and boy, did you pick
the wrong one !!! feel free to pull your head out of your @ long enough to

Congratulations, you surely get nob-of-the-week kudos for this week.

Clearly you are striving to receive nob-of-the-week for two week straight.

Of the Top 10 people who post in this NG, Bev has to be close or at the top.
He spends more time giving answer and finding solutions than most and has
always been willing to help. He is a class act.

You really ought to go and crawl back under your stone or get under your
bridge, personal insults do not make you big, or clever. The opposite seems
more true.

I truly feel sorry for you, you came to this group looking for advise on
how to improve the quality of life for your aging father, and got nothing
but help and kind thoughts, and you have turned it into a hate fest. you
are the one who should fear old age, because if you treat the people who try
to help you like this, you are destined to live your life lonely and bitter.
(and obviously you are already half way there)

Dude, you are the one dishing out the rubbish!

You were provided, in detail, a possible solution to the situation. You got
your advice and when you were corrected about your views of MVPs, you
dropped the hammer on Bev, you insult him and you do a fine job of offending
Germans. Kudos to you junior, it takes a lot to hack off a whole bunch of
people in one, big, broad shot.

You remind me of a guy over in the Handheld PC group. He has managed to
offend and throw just about everyone under the bus because they don't agree
with him. That group has all but quit responding to him and his posts.
Yeah he still throws people under the bus but nobody gives him the time of
day. Guess what junior? You are likely destined for the same treatment.
You come into a group that has an established audience and people who
provide support on a regular basis (Bev, Neil Smith, AlanS and others) and
start throwing stones, you will quickly be ignored.

Regards,

I won't say anything about you (you seem to be thriving on the negative
feedback), but unlike you, I know Bev, and I know he's not sad, I knows
he isn't an old man (at least, not at heart), I know that his Pocket PC
isn't that small ( ;) ), and I know that he has many friends. In fact,
I'm proud to be one of them. Bev rocks.

Its called taking it on the chin sonny. Something you foreign types
wouldn't know anything about seeing as you tend to leave all the wars to us!

What would batter you types down just makes us more resiliant! I ain't
special though. Just typical British stiff upper lip.
