Anyone have any thoughts on the 975X/945P chipsets as they relate to Core 2?

I think you need a BIOS update on the 975 boards for them to work with Conroe. I've heard that not all of them will be compatible. Best to check with the manufacturer berofe purchasing or wait for the 965's.

945 will not run Conroe. 965, and 975 will run Conroe, of those I know.

Any specific features of the 965 or 975 in relation to Conroe that makes one more desirable that the other?

Peace

Everyone pretty much summed it up, 965 or 975.

A relatively simple procedure to ensure the Core 2 Duo compatibility is to directly use P965 Express. Announced in early June, this chipset only equips very recent motherboards and is automatically compatible with Core 2 Duo. Compared to the 975X, it works with a more functional ICH8. The MCH can only support one PCI Express x16 link, whereas the 975X can support one x16 link or two x8 and Crossfire. SLI will be accessible via the new NVIDIA nForce 5 line for Intel and will be released this summer. Here again, all nForce 5 motherboards will be automatically compatible with the Core 2 Duo, but sooner there will also be a modified nForce 4 that will support the Core 2 Duo.

Even using the 965 chipset doesn't mean a motherboard will be fully compatabile with Conroe. Be sure to check your motherboards CPU compatibily list. Here is a perfect example. It will require a Bios update for Conroe support. Unless you have an old P4 around to flash the BIOS, wait for new boards to ship with the updated Bios.

ADD: The list is for the Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 by the way.

Every one is rushing to get their product to market.
once we recieve that product we're at the manufactures mercy.
Your so right .
thats why it pays to be patient
but who wants to wait ?
not me :)

Me either that's why it is killing me that they are taking so long. :(
Right now my hopes are with the ASUS P5B. It uses the 965 chipset and claims its Conroe ready, instead of Conroe supported. Just haven't seen the CPU list yet as ASUS hasn't posted it. Anyways I'll keep my fingers crossed with hopes that the original BIOS release will support Conroe. :)

Keep in mind that the 965 does not natively support PATA. Third parties are adding it, but not all Intel made ones will. You may need an extra PCI slot for an adapter card if you have PATA drives.

The 945 will run Conroe with certain modifications. ASRock has two 945 based boards that support Conroe, the ConRoeXFire-eSATA2 R2.0, which supports Crossfire, and the ConRoe945PL-GLAN.

Asus is also coming out with the P5LD2-VM SE, another 945 based motherboard. I imagine Asus and ASRock are using the same workaround for Conroe compatibility. There are also a bunch of motherboards using the 946 chipset, which I believe has Intel's blessing for running Conroe.

I'm using the Conroe boards thead by Skyline GT-R from the XtremeSystems forum for reference, but only citing the examples that have a manufacturer's web page. Here's the thread.

Biostar has 3 motherboards coming out based on the 945 chipset.

Biostar Motherboards

One of them only has a 800mhz FSB. How will this run Conroe? Don't all Conroes run at 1066mhz FSB?
