I just want to get an idea of which Conroe is going to be the best seller. I'm pretty sure it will be the E6600 since it beats a FX-62 while costing around $316.
I'm planning to get the E6300 at it's launch. I'm not sure if I'm going to overclock it since it's going to be a real boost from my current Athlon XP 2000+. Also, I don't see the point in paying for that extra cache.

According to Anandtech the extra cache provided about 3.5% average boost in performance and up to 10% in some cases. The higher cache is Intel's way of making up for not having a built in memory controller.
Also, I'm in the same boat as you are. I'm looking to upgrade my P4 (socket 478) 2.8 GHz prescott to a Conroe. I imagine the the boost in performance isn't the only thing I will be noticing (like the reduced heat).
I'm in the same boat, working off a Single-Core 2.8Ghz 400Mhz-FSB Prescott Socket 478-dead end. I will be getting some dual-core thing before the year is over, but I'm going to see how the prices settle and a few OEM offerings. I'm going to be building it, I just want to see what components they are using and such. Last year, when I was about to get a computer, I was so sure of getting a X2 3800+ and OC'ing as far as I could. But now, I may have a change of heart.
