I think my computer may be crashing because CPU is overheating. First, what is a good program for monitoring CPU temperature? Second, is upgrading my CPU fan worth it even if I have poor case circulation (it's an Emachine system case and it only lets me attach a 80mm fan in the back - no I don't want to drill holes)? I mean, assuming better CPU cooling would fix my crashes, do you think a better CPU fan would provide enough cooling even if the air inside my case is hot? If nothing else, I guess I can use the computer with side open, but I'd rather not. Thanks for any help.
Your heatsink will only cool the CPU down to case temps(theoretically), so the cooler the air inside your case, the cooler your CPU can potentially get. Adding case fans would be your best bet(first). You say you don't want to drill holes, but running with the side panel off isn't a great solution either. The dust will be terrible, and it will be noisier and uglier...not to mention if you have pets, or small kids that could get in there. If you insist on not increasing case flow, then (if it isn't too-too hot in your case) a faster/bigger fan may help drop temps a little. The best approach is to increase case flow and increase heatsink fan speed and/or size. Don't forget that if the air in your case is very hot, it not only makes the CPU run hotter, but also the motherboard, video card, RAM, and hard drives will all run hotter, and nothing kills a hard drive faster than heat. Thanks for your help guys. I'm not sure what to do yet, but it sounds like I have to figure out some way to get more case cooling. I thought Emachine package was a decent deal, but too many annoying issues come with it. Argh..
Sorry but it isn't. Life expectantcy is about 2- 8 months. A good deal for $399 is NOT an E-Machine. The cabling inside is a mess, usually blocking everything, the components are sub-par, so the added heat will cause them to die that much quicker.
Your best bet is to get rid of that case, power supply, and motherboard, the latter 2 will die, mark my word. Put the CPU, memory and hard drive in something better, you'll be okay then
