Ok to shorten this up:
-$1000 not including monitor, keyboard, mouse
-future upgradability
-need it built by early August for college

Planning:
-E6300 if I can get ahold of one
-965 motherboard...waiting for more to become available
-COOLER MASTER CAVALIER 3
-DDR2 800 RAM, not sure which yet...motherboard compatible
-7900gt
-WD or Seagate HD for under $100
-$30 optical drive from newegg
-Antec Truepower 550

What do you think? Also might want an after market CPU heatsink/fan to OC.

Looks good.... for the 965 board, go for the Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3

Hey Prophecy, do you keep linking that board because it is good, or because it's the only in stock 965 board on newegg?

AFAIK, it's good (Gigabyte has a good rep in the mobo market), it's 965P based, so you have guaranteed Conroe support, and you're not paying an arm and a leg for it. Other 965P based boards cost at least 1.5 times as much.

You shouldn't need an aftermarket heatsink and fan to overclock that CPU, unless you are going really high, i.e. 50%.

I was thinking about getting DDR2 667 and running the FSB at 333 for 1:1. This would bring the e6300 to about 2.3-2.4ghz. Do you think I'll need an after market cpu cooler for that? Also I was thinking about the Gigabyte, but maybe it's overpriced too at this point? If I'm not able to get ahold of an Allendale or Conroe at the end of july I may have to rethink my strategy here 8O .

The Gigabyte board I suggested is the cheapest 965P board out right now. Go for DDR2-800 instead of 667. Going to 2.3 or 2.4 you probably won't need an aftermarket cooler. Going up to 2.5 or 2.6 is where you would need one.

okay, now am i missing something, or is DDR2800 WAY overpriced???

All the tests i have seen have showed it to be (rough aproximate) five percent better then DDR667, hoewever the price is FAR more then five percent higher for the speed difference. I understand there may be an advantage if you were using 800mhz ram with a 800 mhz fsb... but the conroe has a 1066 fsb, and he wants to OC it to 1333 (your my hero if you do that btw)

with 667, he would get 1:2, and save enough money from the slower ram to upgrade to a E6600, which has a higher multiplyer, and an added 2MB of L2 cashe. I know that the L2 has been shown by tom's to only help 3.5 percent, but in itunes it helped almost ten percent, and I dont know about you, but I use itunes alot more then i run the other programs they tested....

Maybe there is something i dont know, and if there is, I'm sorry, and I would love to know what I'm missing.

That's pretty similar to the rig I'm planning to build, I've decided to go for either the Thermaltake Tsunami Dream or Lian Li PC-60 Plus case though, both of which are really nice. I haven't read enough Conroe mobo reviews yet to make my mind up on one yet.

getting value ddr2 ram will save you quite abit of cash that can be used to get a slightly better CPU (E6400)... AnandTech did a really great job of testing conroe related hardware and I suggest you take alook at the A-Data ram they recommend, its cheap and can do some great overclocks for the price. Alright thanks I'll take a look at that.

Will all 965 mobos support Kentsfield in the future? I'm assuming so, but does anyone know for sure? I don't want to have to upgrade my motherboard/ram (other than adding more) for a while.

No, but people say the DQ6 from gigabyte will, but then again you are paying $130 more for it than the DS3.

its not. I believe ABIT has the AB9-PRO on newegg. Srry if i got the name wrong though. It looks like newegg has 5 965x mobos.
