I bought a x850pro from ATI. Anyone else buy one as well? If so, has yours shipped? They are supposed to ship today from what I gather.

Word. :?

It's a good mid-range card for us AGP-people who haven't jumped to PCI-E.

Don't have the playa hate the game.

Nope, mine hadn't shipped as of a few hours ago. I just cancelled my order as I also ordered and already received the cheaper X800XL refurb, and really didn't need both cards. But note, even way back when i ordered mine they did say it ships this week, not today.

Just got off of the phone with the ATI Shop and as of 6:30pm the orders havent gone throught yet. I was told i would recieve an email from them confirming the sale, and one for tracking purposes. I just hope they're not busy laser-cutting the cores! 8O

Word.

Thanks for calling them and finding out. They should ship this week. Hopefully these will unlock good0r like they are supposed to too. If not, oh well still $140 and better than my crappy 6600.

Good luck with the unlocks guys. I'm a bit dissappointed I'll miss out on the attempt.

Yeah the performance increase is pretty good from this.

Can't wait0r!
July 18, 2006 12:56:31 PM

Yeah, I order one too. I hope this thing unlocks like it's supposed to. I sent an email to them and this is the reply they gave me:

Thank you for contacting the ATI US Online Store.

Quote:
If you received an email message stating that your pre-order is on
backorder after the order was placed, we apologize. The order that was
placed is a pre-order for this product. Your order will be fulfilled
when we receive the product. Rest assured that we will not charge your
credit card until the product is released and ships.

Our warehouse will be receiving a shipment of this product when it is
released, and will be fulfilling orders upon arrival. You will receive
an email notification when your order is actually shipped (unless you
are notified otherwise).

Sort of a generic reply. I replied back and asked for a date when the cards will be coming in to them. Where are you guys going to get your bios from? I found this site and it looks pretty solid. They used the same card we're getting, made by ATI.

I got another reply from ATI today. Looks like it's a waiting game now:

Once again we do apologize that you do not have more information to give
you.

With AGP dead I seriously doubt ATI will have 10000000 orders to fill so I really doubt we'll wait that long.

Hopefully that is.

ATI recommends a 350WT power supply for Radeon X850 Pro 256MB AGP. I am thinking of putting it in a Dell Dimension 4400 which has a 250WT power supply and I have a question:

I understand that the 250WT power supply is kind of weak. However, this Dell has nothing much inside. So, I figure most of the wattage will be used to feed the video card.

Will I be able to use Radeon X850 Pro 256MB AGP in this machine or will I have lots of problems?

Here's what's in the Dell:

Pentium 4 2.4GHz CPU at stock
512 Mb of RAM
Standard CD-ROM drive (32X I think)
10/100 3Com Network Card
Some kind of basic Sound Blaster card
40 Gb hard drive
One CPU fan
One system fan (rear exhaust)
July 18, 2006 3:42:05 PM

Yeah I agree, it'll probably be next week before we see them though. I want mine now!
July 18, 2006 3:47:00 PM

TRUST ME ON THIS.

I *work* with Dell computers all the time at my job. Even today I had to fix 5 Dell machines. That is why my current PC is a Dell, it was junk we were going to throw away and I brought back to life.

DO *NOT* use the 250W power supply in that Dell. They are horribly unreliable PSUs and it will not work with that video card. The good news is you can buy a 450W power supply for a little as $30-40. However make sure it fits right as Dell likes to make their power supplies backwards so you're stuck with it (unless you use metal sheers like I did and cut out the appropriate section, which is easy).

I REPEAT, DO *NOT* buy a x850pro and use that 250W PSU!!!!!!!!!! :!: :!: :!: :!: :!:

I ordered an x800xl on Sunday 7/16, just got an email about 11am central time Tuesday morning saying the package had shipped on Monday.

I was happy to see a full box with the X800XL refurb. Here's what you'll get :

July 18, 2006 6:30:21 PM

You really can't go wrong with an ATI refurb. It's practically new and comes with a warranty, not to mention the price. I can't wait for my X850Pro now.

I agree with you on ATI refurbs. I still have a X800XTpe ATI refurb that came with a full 3 year warranty and honestly did not even look used. People rumored those cards were leftover brand new stock...which looking at mine I would believe.
July 18, 2006 6:40:46 PM

It's a good thing that ATi's store occasionally has some pretty crazy prices, and that they often have refurbs for sale. Indeed, though I've not pruchased a refurb from them, everything I've heard about them say that they're effectively brand-new cards, with everything you'd want, plus they come at a dramatically slashed price.

Word.

Well, AGP may be dead to the card makers, hence why you can't get an AGP X1900 or 7900, but they certainly aren't dead to consumers; after all, it wasn't the case that all of the millions of AGP owners immediately tossed out their old boards for a shiny new PCI-e board when it was introduced. Rather, they stuck with older hardware.

I would count myself among that crew; I built my AGP system in early 2004, and saw no need to toss everything out for a PCI-express card. I've been using an AGP X800XT for quite a while; I picked it up for some $250US. (new, OEM)

July 19, 2006 6:58:43 AM

I know this doesn't help, but I received my x800xl yesterday (shipped from Texas to California in 3 business days), and everything's worked fine. It looks like a brand new card, so get it on it if you have an AGP slot and want to to upgrade!

is the x800xl better than the x850pro?
July 19, 2006 7:15:05 AM

I'm not the most informed on this subject, but I know that they are comparable videocards. If you check the benchmarks (on tomshardware for instance), the x850pro usually scores slightly higher than the x800xl, however, the latter has more pixel pipelines vs. the higher clocked x850pro. I didn't feel like waiting for the x850pro to come into stock, so I just went ahead and got the the x800xl for 120 bucks. Not too shabby in my opinion.

If you are tired of that card you are done with AGP, so I guess you wouldn't take a R430 sweetened with a few NV25's?

You could get good money for that card. It shouldn't run you much extra to have a 7900GT/x1800XT instead. Can't you hold out for G80/R600 though?

Is there a way you can unlock the 4 extra pipes without overclocking the card to PE/XT speeds?

When you flash the bios to unlock the pipes, it sets the speeds to the speeds of an Xt PE.

I'm not exactly sure. You might. Just be sure to monitor temperatures after you flash.

If anyone's checked the ATI site lately, you'll notice they changed the date for shipment on the X850Pro's from the week of July 17 to the week of July 24.

Well, for the money you could stick to NV and buy a 6600GT or 6800XT; both lame in comparison. :? Or save $20 and buy the in stock X800XL instead as it's in a whole different class compared to other AGP cards for that money.

I'm just kidding around with GW. See he hates cards that have no overclocking headroom, and he already owned a 12-pipe R430 that got his blood boiling. He wants a decent card that he can turn into a monster and while the X800XL is a decent card, it's got little room to improve. I think GW had something like a 7900GT in mind.
July 20, 2006 12:35:11 PM

Just to keep the thread going until we get out cards, what are the specs of the system you're putting you new X850 into? I'll start:

Intel Pentium 4 3.0E Prescott 800Mhz FSP Socket 478
Arctic Cooling Freezer 4
ASRock P4i65G Socket 478 Intel 865G Micro ATX Motherboard
ePOWER ZU-500W 500W Power Supply
pqi POWER Series 1GB 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200)
2 X Maxtor 80GB ATA133 hard drives
1 X LG 120GB USB External hard drive
LG DVD-RW disc drive
Gateway Pinta Desktop Mid-Tower Case (Pretty nice case for being a Gateway)
Gateway 17" flat panel LCD
Boston Acoustics BA745 2.1 speaker system

I think the X850Pro will be a nice little addition.

8O You really think you can keep this thread going that long? :p

Mine was going to replace a 300/600 clocked GF4ti4200 in a Soltek SL-75FRN2-RL mobo with a XP2500+ @ 2.2GHz (3200+ speeds 11*200). Instead the X800XL will occupy it's spot.
July 20, 2006 1:34:13 PM

IT CAN BE DONE!!

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention the card it was replacing. It will be replacing a vanilla 128mb Radeon 9600. Hopefully, it'll be like night and day when I play games on my X850Pro (flashed to an X850XT PE of course) compared to my 9600.
July 20, 2006 2:26:54 PM

I noticed a nice bump up from my 9800pro to my 6600 Geforce. The x850pro will piss all over 9600, 9800, 6600, etc. etc. so for $140.00 we got a deal.

Even though I am not happy ATI is shipping this week at least they have the manners to post a new release date. Instead of keeping us in the dark they decided to just tell us flat-out the cards aren't ready, which is cool for a company to do.

Word.
July 20, 2006 2:32:06 PM

I agree. It would have been very easy for them to just blow us off and say they don't need to know when, they'll get here when they get here. Also, if they follow through with what they say, they'll be emailing us when they come in, so that's cool of em.

I'd be surprised if even massivley overclocked you would see much of a difference going from a 256-bit 9800 pro to a 6600. The 9800 pro easily beats a 6600 in pretty much anything at stock speeds, so any impovement you would see would come after OC'in quite a bit. Did you have a 128-bit 9800 pro?

Check out these comparisons at stock speeds:

Shoot in their charts the 9800 pro also took Fear, COD2 and OGL Riddick. Only in D3 did the 6600 manage a victory.
July 20, 2006 3:22:16 PM

Yes, 128-bit. Back when I bought it it was used and I got it cheap. Although 128-bit was "the suck" it was cheap. Cheap being the key word here. My 6600 was cheap too.

The x850pro is cheap. The only thing I'm not cheap on are my hoes!

July 20, 2006 3:28:36 PM

Yeah, that explains it. Your 128-bit 9800 pro is actually a slightly overclocked 9500 pro, so I can see a 6600 easily beating that card. When I see 9800 pro I think about the real ones with 256-bit mem, and had the thought you actually downgraded :p
July 20, 2006 3:38:12 PM

I do contract work overseas with computers and the computer I have now I built out of junk that was going to be thrown away. So I had to buy a new video card, PSU, and ram. The entire system basically cost me little over $300. The $100 6600 price was appealing. I even found a 20" Silicon Graphics Trinitron monitor that was going to be thrown out too. Sure, it weighs 80lbs and it's not LCD but the screen is pretty.
Had I a 256-bit 9800pro I would have had that shipped over instead. I am cheap, that is the point, and that's why I have $$$$$$$.

Now the x850PRO will replace this pos 6600 (which I have never been really happy with). That is, if ATI ships it 8O
