I'm going to buy this motherboard...

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6813131024

I have 2x 80gb 7200 western digital hard drives, and I'd like to run them in raid 0. What's a good PCI ATA100 raid card that's hardware, not software? How expensive is hardware vs. software for raid 0? How much of a performance increase would I see running raid 0 with these drives using a PCI IDE raid card vs. running just an 80gig solo as the system drive connected to the motherboard?

Ummm.....just use the two onboard SATA ports and run RAID 0. You can do hardware RAID 0 on that too. There won't be enough difference in speed to justify buying a seperate RAID card.

The only reason to do so would be so that you can migrate your RAID array from one system to another as you upgrade.

Or you wish to dual-boot off of the array.

And why would you not be able to set up dual boot on a RAID array using the onboard controller?

The extreme headache getting Linux/BSD/Solaris/etc. to read the semi-hardware RAID without vendor support and requiring manually mapping the boundaries of the different partitions. (Note: I can't speak about dual-booting Windows, I haven't tried to do so on a semi-hardware RAID but a quick search shows it does look like it's quite possible if you just make sure to install the latest OS last).

Of course it is technically possible, but at least when I looked at it about a year ago it was a big enough hassle and the success rate of those who tried was spotty enough for me to bite the bullet and get a full-up hardware controller. A quick search shows not a lot has changed.

I think the issue here is that I was refering to Windows + Some Non Windows OS and you were thinking One Windows + Another Windows. We're both right for the respective case.
