I have a single forest single domain Windows 2000 AD. I am trying to bring up
a child domain at a remote site, and not having much luck. When I go through
DCPROMO and specify that I would like to as a child domain, the root domain
isnt seen. Any ideas? Thanks!

Symbian,
I will ask this question simply for the sake of asking: why are you using a
child domain for the remote Site?
In most cases simply using Active Directory Sites and Services to create a
Site for each physical location that your company has does the trick quite
nicely!
Generally speaking, setting up a child domain for each remote location is
the tell-tell sign of a WINNT 4.0 Administrator with little experience in
WIN2000 or WIN2003 Active Directory ( and this is no criticism! ).
All you would do is create a new Site ( for example, if you had the
corporate HQ in beautiful Roanoke, VA and 'remote offices' in Houston, TX
and Philadelphia, PA and St. Louis, MO you could name each Site by the city
name.... ) and then create a Subnet and associate it with the correct Site
( so, Roanoke would be the 'DefaultFirstSiteName' - which you could change
to 'HQ' or 'Roanoke' or whatever if you liked - and that would have a subnet
of 192.168.1.0/24 while Houston would have a subnet of 192.168.10.0/24 and
Philadelphia would have a subnet of 192.168.20.0/24 and St. Louis would have
a subnet of 192.168.30.0/24 ). Then, when you put in a Domain Controller in
Houston simply make sure that it has the correct IP Address ( say,
192.168.10.20 or whatever ). Same for Philadelphia and St. Louis.
Just make sure that you have a Site-to-Site VPN in place ( or, better, a
private T1 ) for the links between the offices.
