I was wondering if it's OK to mount a HDD vertically for a while... It doesn't say in any manuals or anything about the orientation, people's thoughts would be appreciated.

Vertical is fine for the life of the drive if you need. Most enterprise class storage arrays have the drives mounted vertically for packing efficiency. I was going to post an image of one but I don't have a high enough post count.

off topic: maybe I should jump into more flame wars

+1 It's fine. Just try not to move the case around too much when it is running.... but that is good advice no matter how the hard drive is mounted.
