I have the following problem and require some MAJOR help! :)

They currently have exchange 2000 running on a windows 2000 machine which is
a DC and also hold the global cataloge, they also have a windows 2003 server
which is also a DC. For some reason my predecessor has seized the FSMO rolls
from what I have discovered so far. This is causing some problems as I am
sure you can imagine. We have recently purchased Exchange 2003 and want to
load this on the Windows 2003 Server and migrate the Mailboxes over to the
new server. Can anyone please offer me some advice as I am sure that this is
going to be complicated and I'm unsure as to where I should start due to the
Global Cataloge issue..

Would you recommend removing active directory from the Windows 2003 Server
and reinstalling active directory and replicating it over from the 2000
machine which has the exchange on?

Any Help and advice would be gratefully received!!

If the roles have been SEIZED and not TRANSFERRED, then one of those two
boxes needs to be demoted with the /forceremoval switch. After that, a
metadata cleanup needs doing. Then you can promote again. It might be
easier to do what you propose -as I believe it's not supported to uninstall
Exchange from a DC.

On what? The removal?

1. Run DCPROMO /FORCEREMOVAL
2. Then metadata cleanup:

On the FSMO roles:

That also provides links on how to transfer and seize the roles, etc.

And this article might help ensuring that everything is transferred to the
remaining DC:

And the install and replication please.

Cheers

Paul

The reinstall - DCPROMO, and add a new DC to an EXISTING domain.

The replication - install the support tools and run REPLMON. Then replicate
the necessary partitions.
