Just thought I'd put a quick post up. It will probably dissappear quickly but playing HL2 DM, CS:S, DoD:S and Battlefield 2 I kept getting packetloss which made playing (especially BF2) a pain in the ass and for those who don't know what I'm saying I was getting laggy moments once per 10-15 secs despite having an excellent ping.

Anyway I found out the problem was Zonealarm. Even tho I grant the programs full and complete access it still bjorked everything up. So I switched to Black Ice and it works perfectly now even if Black Ice isn't as "user friendly" and you have to manually open ports etc.

Anyway that was aimed at you BigMac seeing as you stated you were getting packet loss online as well.

Err... ya... so....

The thing is, I don't have ZoneAlarm on my system.

I do have some other firewall thingy running, so I'll see if disabling that will help, although I rather keep it running. If that's the problem I'll give Black Ice a try. I don't mind setting open ports manually, as long as I get some decent messages from Black Ice as to what port is blocked.

I don't run software firewalls on my computer aside from XP's.. but I do have my router set up to point towards my roommate's computer should someone get through the router and want to do anything. 'honeypot' if you like that retarded term.

That's my annoyance. Black Ice doesn't report to tell you its blocking anything which is annoying me.

I may try downloading cracked Zone Alarm pro. Maybe something just [-peep-] up in my initial installation of the standard version.

And Wolfy learns the hard way to not go online without a firewall.

I got a virus or most likely a worm. Disabled and wouldnt allow ANY firewall to run, even after reboots and reinstalls.

Wouldn't allow task manager to run so I couldn't try to stop the process.

Wasn't detected by spybot, adaware or fully updated AVG

Ran my cpu usage to 100%, kept replicating files on my C: drive and if I went online it stole every last scrap of my bandwidth so I had a charming night reinstalling windows.

Let my stupidity be a warning. :)

The easiest thing is to plop down $40 and buy yourself a good Hardware firewall.
Any Linksys router or wireless router will work just fine.
There are other brands but I only have experience with Linksys.

You get the best protection using both, but then take the easier route and just disable the annoying-pesky software firewall while gaming.

When you say hardware firewall I assume you're refering to a router right?

Yeah, I assume your assumption is correct and had made the same assumption myself.

Yes all Linksys routers have a built in Hardware Firewall. You are basically invisible on the internet. If someone tries to hack your machine the only thing they will ever see is your routers IP address.
I open ports for gaming online then close them when I am done. Takes a whole 20 to 30 seconds before and after .

Linksys = Block WAN Request will hide your Router's IP. Not that you didn't know that, but just to add some info to your post.
