I have a DC running windows 2003 server and AD. I also have an Exchange
2003 server. Recently, a microsoft patch caused my DC to crash and I was
out of commission for 2 hours. I was wondering? Can I make a backup domain
controller from one of my Windows 2000 servers and still utilize AD and
Exchange 2003? How do I do this? Do I have to upgrade my Win 2000 Server
to 2003 Server?

Which mode is Your domain and forest running? If this is Windows 2003
native You can't incorporate Windows 2000 Dc into your AD.

The Domain is Windows 2000 native and Forest is Windows 2000....at least,
that is what is says under Active Directory Domains and Trusts. Will what
you suggested work? Is there a good article that I could follow?

Ray,

It is always a good idea to have at least two Domain Controllers in an
environment. Naturally, this is not always feasible. In worst case
scenario, use a workstation class machine and install WIN2000 or WIN2003 and
then run dcpromo to create an Additional Domain Controller in an existing
Domain. make that second Domain Controller also a Global Catalog and
install DNS on it ( and make sure to update the DHCP Options to include this
second 'DNS Server' ).

Is it a MUST to have my second server be a DNS? How do I get exchange to
work with this new AD server?

Ray,

Is it a *MUST*? No!

Is it a really good idea? Yes!

Make both Domain Controllers also Global Catalog Servers ( done in the
Active Directory Sites and Services MMC ) as well.
